Emmerdale in the 80's had "Silent Walter", he would always been seen at the bar with Amos blabbering away to him but he would never say anything in reply.

Emmerdale have also been using the same extra/actor to play a undertaker who has been present at nearly every funeral since at least the Plane Crash.

The ones in EastEnders have been on the show for years and are like part of the regualr cast.

Ina the flower lady (Actress has died)
Winston the guy on the record stall
Mary (ithink her name is) that works at the cafe
Tracey that works at the vic
The Milk man
The post man

They have all been on the show years and had quite a few talking parts
I guess thats quite realisitc

Nice to see Tracey getting a couple of lines the other week, she's been in it such a long time now and deserves a few more lines.

There is an extra in Corrie who has been in it for years so every now and then they give him something to say - wish they wouldn't though as he is so wooden and can't act. I think they do it to be kind but it just ruins the episode really. I think they call him Dev.

As long as that? I know the one you mean - it's the bald headed guy who actually got to say "this one" the other week - referring to Terry when his and Vivs bodies were taken away. I particularly remember him for carrying baby Daniels coffin but didn't realise he'd been there as long as that!

Although there ARE regular staff at Sharma & Sharma as well - some of which have even been named.

I know there is a prison guard in Emmerdale who has been being featured since at least 2007 as well and they do of course though have the long serving PC Mike Swirling (since 2004) and Dr Josephine Abbot (since 2006).

Emmerdale can be good with this sort of thing. Unfortunately they've let themselves down recently - Sharon Mackenzie appeared in 2007/8 as Liz Tanner, a social worker who made regular visits to Sam Dingle. She started appearing again last October, and was credited simply as "Social Worker". Reappearing again last month they made the disappointing decision to call her Lydia Tatton.

Among the generally silent actors who are seen regularly is britains oldest extra, as seen in this DS article. I think I spotted one of their long serving police officers at the station the other day, too.

One of the police officers who was seen regularly when Donna was at Hotten Nick has apparently been transferred to Weatherfield! I first spotted him after David knocked down Graeme. He still doesn't speak, but did appear in the live episode. Corrie has many long serving regulars at the Rovers as well.

That reminds me, Corrie have several recurring police officers

DC Redfern (who investigated David's car accident and then Tracy's attack), then an unnamed police officer who has been seen on 15 different occasions, most famously here

DC Redfern has only been in since October though. Police officers often hang around for a few months - such as the one who used to play Ruth Fowler in EastEnders. She appeared intermittently in Corrie from March 08 to May 09 as DC Weller. Emmerdale's often stay around for a few years though - such as Nick Henshall and before him DS Karen Williams, not to mention Charles Vaughan!

There was also Jonathan and Paul Ross' mother who was a long-standing extra on EE. She was sacked for telling storyline spoilers to her son Paul who then blurted a few out a few of them on his radio show. I thought she'd have been back by now.

Ron Tarr played Big Ron. He was beloved by the show and got an onscreen funeral, didn't he?

There's also the Afro-Caribbean lady, she's about 60 by now, she and Ina were actually my favorites over the years because they always seemed so natural and believable. Winston strikes me as a camera hog who always has this "Look! The camera's on me now!" look on his face in any given episode.

Excuse the quite poor grammar there - the bit about PC Swirling/Dr Abbot was originally after the bit about the Social Worker, hence the 'though'. I tried to tidy my post up a bit and that's what happens!

DI Marsden in EastEnders is as pretty iconic one as 'extras' go. Although she was more of a recurring character I guess.

I want her to become a regular!

yes she had a storyline too
She had an Affair with Bert (Jays Grandad) when mo was seeing him.

The actress died but i think she's still in EastEnders at the moment so iguess she will need to be written out as she owned the flowerstall that Jean worked on
