I've noticed that an awful lot of DS forumers rave on about Britney and her amazing career.

I'm not a hater. I think she's released some cracking pop tunes like Toxic, Everytime and Hit Me Baby... but her greatness as a pop star stops there.

Some people on here hail her like shes the second coming. I saw one post claiming that pop music only exists because of Britney Spears!

As far as I see it, she can't sing, dance, act, write songs, perform very well or play any instruments. So other than having a distinctive voice, what has she got?

Britney's good but she's not that good is she?

Some people have a habbit of hyping total garbage, I think it may be a virus, you don't need to be that great a talent to be loved it seems it must be her personality people like or something?

Personally I don't see the attraction.

However, I would wager that most Britney fans don't agree with me that At The Drive In were the best thing to happen to music in the last 15 years or so.

Its all subjective, for me she was simply marketed better than any other pop star in the last decade or so. I'm sure that you could point to better singers, dancers (and even her biggest fans would struggle to defend her acting...) but the people that created "brand Britney" did a pretty impressive job.

She's appalling. She cannot sing, she cannot write music or lyrics, she cannot play an instrument, she's a notorious lip-syncer and her music is just generic pop.

She's is also as lazy as they come, never performs or does much in the way of promotion. She's just a cash cow, a team of people write her music, the songs and music videos and just watch the money roll in as her silly fans buy into it.

Rant over.

She's awful and a disgrace to the music industry..

"Brand" Britney are to blame and the sad thing is too many stupid people actually buy into this crap.

She can't sing live, her records are studio creations with her input being heavily processed vocals.

Finally, I don't think people with "problems" should be in the showbiz spotlight.

I love her because I grew up listening to and watching her.

She was the first proper popstar I adored and couldn't get enough of. Singles, posters, books, the lot!
Loved her songs, loved her videos, loved her image, loved everything. And yes I can sort of see it now that at the end of the day, she was still just another manufactured popstar, but she also was something more special than that. She filled a niche and filled it damn well. She was a great popstar.

So although her music and appeal has been slowly declining these past few years, and I listen to lots of different styles of music now, not just pop, she's had such a massive effect on me that I'll always support and love her.

Her documentary on Sky also made me warm to her even more.

Britney is amazing.
Why??

I simply cant see whats so special about her?? Im genuinely mystified.

My only conclusion is she's an aspirations figure who connects with young girls who want to look sexy and fashionable. Britney DOES look sexy and fashionable, but thats the sum of it IMO...

While I do like some of her songs (namely Toxic and Everytime), she is largely overrated.
She can't sing very well, but she would be more respected if she at least sung live (I know she has done, but nowhere near enough. I mean, I'm not a big fan of someone like Lady Gaga, but I do respect she sings live).

Sorry im a big fan of her and i have to say most of the time she is not fashionable. Have you seen her hair and clothes when she gets papped. So i dont really think your judgement is correct. Plus i doubt its still little girls that are her main fan base most of her fans will have grown with her music and be late teens or older.

To repeat what I said in the other thread - she's had some very good songs, but they are more to do with her collaborators than Britney herself - musically speaking there's nothing about HER which is any more remarkable than any other singer on the planet.

'Hold It Against Me' is a perfect example of that - many of her fans were raving about the song and saying 'Britney's bringing dubstep to the mainstream!' but let's be honest - the production is the only part of that song which is any decent, and we all know Britney would of had no part in that whatsoever. I'd be surprised if she even knew what dubstep was.

Her popularity is more about her public image and personal life than her musical ability. While that IS something which is important for most other popstars, in the case of Britney it's her collaborators who put all that side of things into her music, not herself.

Britney may not be everyone's cup of tea, but to say she can't dance is ridiculous. Watch this video (from about 58 secs in) for just one example of how good she can dance!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yX8ZXA6qB8

As for writing songs, she's written & co-written a few of her songs but hey, many singers don't write their own stuff. Elvis and Sinatra wrote very few of their own songs, but they were no less respected for that, were they?! (just an example). They were entertainers, first and foremost, as is Britney. Completely different styles, but all entertainers.

Britney is far from being the best singer in the world but she has a unique, distinctive voice. Like Madonna, not the best singer in the world, but a distinctive voice. I instantly recognise both Britney & Madonna from their voices alone when any new song is played on the radio. I much prefer a less than perfect but unique voice than countless "perfect" singers who all sound like one another, with no character or personality to them/their voices!

In my opinion, Britney is a great pop star, with a terrific back catalogue of classic modern pop songs. Millions love her, many don't. Pretty much for norm for any performer then! What more is needed? She's a pop entertainer, not running for President! lol

Doesn't she play the piano?
Didn't she write Everytime?

She can sing (kinda) but she even knows that, she said so here

She can certainly dance too...

When I was in my teens and early 20s I loved her, however since then my music preferences and outlook on life have changed.
I'm not into all that selling interviews to OK magazine and that, I prefer artists who love making music and that's all.

I completely agree with this.

Nobody wanted another Bob Dylan. I can like both Bob and Britney in equal measures and still be happy. I don't know why people here have to complain about her. She's not hurting you.

Except maybe the Drama Queen who said she was a disgrace to the Music Industry.

Believe it or not I do see where you're coming from. I have no idea why I'm so obsessed with her and her music!

Personally I really like the songs she does, I love the sound of her voice (treated or not) and it makes me happy to listen to them. I'm perfectly aware she's not the second coming of the Messiah and my life will probably still continue if she were to stop making music

To be fair to her, its her Blackout album and specifically tracks like 'Freakshow' which are credited with bringing dubstep to the mainstream - an album which she was executive producer of...
