RE: Nick announcing the anniversary in front of Audrey in the pub, is he supposedly getting cocky now that it's only a matter of time til Leanne leaves Peter? Gad I can't stand him.

I liked the fact that he referred to their anniversary, it's important for long-running shows to acknowledge past events from time to time.

I thought it was excellent touch, from a continuity point of view. It shows that the writers were doing their homework.

Plus it was a good character moment - another opportunity for manipulative Nick to present himself as the ideal man, one who even remembers anniversaries and significant events as well as being the perfect shop manager, perfect shoulder to cry on, etc. He has taken every opportunity going for weeks now to bolster his own image in Leanne's eyes while discrediting Peter as an unreliable alcoholic (never mind the trauma and serious injury, Nick doesn't consider those valid reasons for depression or relapse). Nick is nothing if not an opportunist.

It was so, so good to see his plan backfire so spectacularly. I think part of the problem has been that a large part of why Leanne loves Peter is the fact that he comes as a package deal with Simon. She loves him for who he is, but she also loves what he gives her in terms of the ready-made family. And Nick sees that and he thinks that the ready-made family is the only reason she is interested, that their relationship is therefore invalid, and that all he has to do is make her realise that and she will fall back into his arms. I don't think he doubted for a moment that Leanne would leave Peter if his drinking got bad enough because the ready-made family wouldn't be enough to keep her there - he wasn't counting on the fact that she does genuinely love Peter for who he is as well as for the family that he and Simon give her, and that her compassion for his pain and trauma would tide them through this rough patch.
