Here is the other interview from USA Today

Scott Caan, left, and Alex O’Loughlin return for a third season on ‘Hawaii Five-0′ on Monday facing new challenges but relying on the same personal chemistry.

Over the first two seasons, the lead characters, played by Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan respectively, have developed a strong friendship firmly based in disagreement. The frequent ones that take place while driving have become known as “carguments.”

“In the first season, I feel we sort of ran on getting to know each other as characters. You have a lot more to argue about when you’re trying to decide whether you like somebody or not,” says Caan, as O’Loughlin laughs. “Now, the arguments have turned more into brothers that argue, which is great, too, as long as there’s something to disagree on.”

“And if there’s not, we’ll often create things,” says O’Loughlin, in a dual interview with Caan during a visit to the mainland. “I think we’ve done that a fair bit, where the scene seems too sort of smooth and we’ll choose a part of dialogue (and make it) more argumentative than it’s actually written.”

They will have to stow their disputes as Season 3 (Monday, 10 ET/PT) opens with the characters far-flung and in crisis. McGarrett, in Japan, must get reacquainted with his mother, Doris, who he thought died 20 years earlier; Danny will grapple with the possibility of being separated from his young daughter, Grace (Teilor Grubbs), if she and his ex-wife move away from Hawaii; and Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) faces the possibility of losing his wife, Malia (Reiko Aylesworth), or his cousin, Kono (Grace Park) — or both.Five-0 averaged 12 million viewers in Season 2.

“There’s going to be emotional fallout from the decisions that (they) make, like McGarrett reconnecting with his mother. What’s that relationship going to be like with somebody who abandoned you for 20 years?” executive producer Peter Lenkov says. “And Chin’s decision to go to Malia’s side and leave Kono hanging, all that is going to have to play out.”

Bad cop Frank Delano (William Baldwin) will be back, Lenkov says, and don’t count out McGarrett’s nemesis Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos), even though he’s behind bars.

Christine Lahti will play McGarrett’s mother. “She’s a fantastic actor and I’m glad to work with her,” O’Loughlin says. “She brings a new dynamic to the show.

McGarrett also will have a girlfriend, Catherine (Michelle Borth, who has appeared in earlier episodes), but he’s reluctant to admit it, O’Loughlin says. “He’s got issues, man. And the funny thing is the person who stirs him up most about those issues is Danny Williams, who isn’t exactly the relationship guru.”

O’Loughlin, who missed an episode of Season 2 to undergo supervised treatment after taking prescription pain medication for a shoulder injury, says he’s fully recovered. “I got hurt a number of times on the show, and I took a break, and it was the best thing for my physical recovery,” he says. “A lot of people were talking about it because they didn’t have anything else to talk about. Everything’s good now.”

The friendship of O’Loughlin and Caan, born a day apart in 1976, is key to making the on-camera “bromance” work, Lenkov says.

Caan says he and O’Loughlin have a lot in common, including surfing, jiu jitsu and “a nicotine addiction,” and that the buddy element of Five-0 works because they are friends. “It’s hard to go against what really exists,” he says. “If you have a rapport with somebody, that’s going to come out.”

Ah, Hawaii News Now, I use to watch that while I was there over the summer.

There is a big world premier of the first episode of season three on Waikiki beach this Sunday (23rd Sept), so expect a few red carpet interviews to be in the web early next week.

No not yet I have a feeling it could be January again. Hope it is earlier than that I want to see it now.

I’d be really surprised if Sky1 didn’t choose to start season 3 of Hawaii Five O in January, on Sunday nights, with NCIS: Los Angeles, and then run them both weekly without any breaks. It’s a plan that’s worked very well for them, ratings wise, the past couple of years.

I`d expect channel 5 to show it. When though i don`t know.

You do know its now in it’s 3rd season? As it hasn’t been picked up by a terrestrial by now I doubt it ever will be.
Although I suspect Sky might have the exclusive rights (its gets very good ratings for them), thus preventing any other broadcaster getting any sort of 2nd run rights.

But if Bravo and then Sky hadn’t have bought the rights, then yes, I’d have thought it would have been Channel 5’s type of programme.

January is fine by me.... season 2, there was weeks when it wasn't on, one before that too, when it was just days behind America...and they had 'breaks'.

For me, this is the most annoying thing about Sky's monopoly. Oh, I know I shouldn't care as I have access to the channels, but I just think it's completely wrong that they do this.

Whilst It must be annoying for people who don't have sky, I can't see how it can be Sky's fault.

If they've paid good money for a show, I'd expect them to want exclusive rights to it thus enticing people to subscribe

They are a company after all that requires subscribers to survive.

Maybe Sky might start showing season 1 on Pick TV as they have done that with Modern Family and a few other shows!

A friend of mine was over in Hawaii for the premiere of season 3 on the beach and I was so jealous!

I'm sure it will be worth the wait till January!

I think you might be confusing Hawaii Five O with another programme. Both season 1 and season 2 started in January on Sky 1 and ran continuously without any breaks.

I've seen a lot of a certain sequence in my time watching cop shows... but that was certainly one of the most interesting variations of it.

Because they could just not buy the FTA rights.

I absolutely agree. But why not let another channel buy the rights. Even if it's a six months or a year later.

Exactly.

Want to see it first? Get Sky/Cable
Don't mind waiting a while? Don't get Sky/Cable

The ratings for the Season 3 premiere last night were down considerably from last year, pulling a series low 1.8 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic (last year it was a 3.4 rating for the premiere). If it stays at that level or drops much more then i can see them pulling the plug unfortunately. A 1.8 rating for the premiere is not good at all, especially when you consider that most shows get their highest rating for the premiere and then drop. Hopefully it can pick itself back up.

Dare I say it was up against NBC's Revolution ( which took in 9.2m )

I’ve read really good reviews of the season 3 premier, it’s a shame the ratings were so low. I’m sure going up against the premier of Revolution on NBC is the mean reason behind the drop.
Hopefully the Hawaii Five O ratings will pick up as the Revolution ratings will, in my opinion, inevitably drop. Or hopefully CBS will recognise Hawaii Five O’s previously solid ratings and either move it or take its new competition into consideration.

I just hope that lower ratings and the upcoming production obstacles in Hawaii don’t result in season 3 being the programmes last. But it’s early days…

It wasn't the premiere of Revolution, that was last week when it wasn't up against anything. It held viewers far better than i thought it would for it's second episode. Castle (also on at 10pm competing with 5-0 and Revolution) was also down considerably on last year, so i dare say that Revolution is the main factor in these shows shedding viewers to such a dramatic extent. If 5-0 keeps getting these numbers then i can see them moving it to Friday nights (a 1.8 rating would be decent on a Friday).

Surely the Nielsen ratings are all bogus these days, as I watch 2 things that are on at the same time by the magic that is Sky+/BT Vision/Sky OnDemand/BBC iPlayer/Demand5/4oD/+1 etc....

I'm sure they even have this sort of technology in the US

I would imagine there are loads who watch H5O live, and Revolution off-line, and the opposite.

-

* Off-thread, any news on who is taking Revolution in the UK ? Would have thought Sky one, as their new shows are a bit thin on the ground for the autumn, as they have to spread over Living and Atlantic these days too.

I’m not sure if the Nielsen rating system reports on it, but there are rating systems in both the UK and US that take this into account.

You will usually get an overnights rating figure which will be the number of people who watched it live, and later another figure that will also include everyone who watched it within 7 days of the original broadcast. Advertisers don’t like the second figure as much because those viewers have the ability to skip the adverts.

How many people watch (much/any) stuff live these days - I mostly watch 'topical' stuff like BBC Breakfast and News 'live', but much other stuff is pic'n'mix off the Sky+ planner recordings..

Sky+..........Create your own TV channel n'all.

Can't see it being much different in the US either.
