I heard this brilliant song played on the radio during Tony Blackburn's show on Saturday.
After all these years I actually got it! The song's lyrics are brilliant and totally sarcastic.
Loved it.
When the song first came out in the nineteen sixties I liked it for the tune, the acordian and good looking Peter Sarstead.

It was a fantastic tongue in cheek song. I love the line about getting an even suntan "on your back.....and on your legs"
and getting a racehorse for Christmas from the aga Khan and keeping it just for fun "for a laugh..aha ha ha"

I also love the faux french accent, that you wouldn't be able to get away with today. Also, I think I'm right in saying that Peter Sarstedt had two brothers that also had big hits which is pretty unusual.

of course this lovely song was ruined for me forever by a parody version:

Where do you go to you're ugly,
With your big cabbage head,
What about the smell that surrounds you? And the fleas that live in your bed?

The song is used to great effect in the film The Darjeeling Limited along with The Rolling Stones, Joe Dassin, three songs by The Kinks and various Bollywood film tracks.

Good song, great film, brilliant soundtrack.

Apparently, this song was meant to be about Sophia Loren.

One of my dad's favourite songs. It's about not forgetting your roots when you get on in life I guess, or better still don't pretend to be something you're not. It kind of kicks against the idea of social mobility but in a honourable way.

The followup single was 'Frozen Orange Juice' which I thought was great as well.

My dad's other fav had a similar theme Joe South's 'Games People Play' from 1968

Which, I believe, is the only hit song ever played on a Coral 12 string electric sitar.

As a result of this thread I can now reveal that Wikipedia has a page devoted to the topless swimsuit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monokini

I'd never realised it really was "carefully designed".

There was Robin Sarstedt too and I think he had a hit in the 70s with My Resistance Is Low, which I loved. Eden Kane sang Well I Ask You which was also good.

This was a single that i "stole" from my mum along with a stack of others, and when i was a kid i would play it a lot. A great record. I thought it was really sophisticated and very grown up at the time. ..

My dad knew his brother, Robin Sarstedt, when they were growing up together in Calcutta (now known as Kolkata).

RIP

I remember 'Where Did You Go To My Lovely' ..........it was a huge hit

I think he had some other minor hits but never hit the same heights again. I've got a vague memory that he might have duetted with a top female pop star of the day

His older brother performed under the name 'Eden Kane' and was an early British rock n roller in the early 60s

I've had a spoof video version of this in my head since I heard the news. It was by some comedian, and being from Northern Ireland I wonder if it was James Young (Our Jimmy), but I can't find a link to it anywhere. Anyone from Northern Ireland, or further afield know what I might be thinking of? Thanks.

1960's? I thought this song was from the 90's? Or is that a cover or a different song altogether?
