...has a beautiful, soothing voice, I could listen to her singing for hours, and frequently do!

And that's all I have to say on the matter! lol

Sorry to the OP but I have to agree with Mushymanrob. I cannot abide her voice. Reminds me of a cat being turned inside out. To each their own of course. If anyone gets pleasure from her music then great.

Shes can has held a belted note for 19 seconds so she can definitely hold a note. Melisma is a difficult skill to master so why not use it when you are the greatest technician of it
IMO she is the greatest vocallist of all time with a voice and sound quality that is unparalleled. Her voice is heaven sent

Love all those songs you posted!

I have to say, Mariah is my favourite act ever. THAT voice, her songwriting skills, the production on her songs. I agree that some songs are oversung but to me it's impressive, especially the whistle notes.

I love the vocal performance in 'Fly Like A Bird'. Goes from soothing to powerful. Let's hope she can get her mojo back after having her twins! I think it will definately create some magical songwriting. Hopefully a new album next year?

No you may have a different perspeective, what i challeneged was your claim that she can't hold a note and that she instead caterwauls. She does not caterwaul she employs the technique of melisma to her vocals and it is something that she is highly adept at and the level of mastery that she has in it is unparalleled. But she can still however hold very long notes with perfect vibrato.

You may not like her style of singing but you cannot deny that she is not a very gifted vocallist

...but it means nothing if someone doesnt like it! i HATE melisma, so her 'gift' is meaningless to me.

One of the greatest singers ever. A brilliant vocal musician. Her phrasing, use of melisma, the way she creates and resolves a melodic line, her timing, and the use of that insane range. Love her.
She's unique in that she's a virtuoso vocalist and that she's a composer and lyricist. There are many songwriters, like Stevie Nicks, Carole King, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, but none with the phenomenal vocal gift. On the other hand, there are some fantastic vocal divas, Whitney, Barbra, Donna, Linda Ronstadt, but most of them don't write the majority of their stuff. The only other vocal diva who has written a good portion of her stuff is Aretha, but Mariah is the creator of 99% of her music.

I adore Mariah. At first I didn't care, I just thought of her as a woman singing very high, but when you really listen to her, and I mean really, you start to appriciate what a marvel she is. She's a beautiful vocal technician, and a brilliant songwriter.
I wish her voice was still as it was though, but that's time and age for you.

I love Mariah. I think she is an amazing vocalist. Sure, her voice isn't as great as it once was, but she can still sing really well.

Her gift is not melisma. Her gift is absolute mastery over her intrument. And beautiful sound quality

It really bugs me when people say Mariah just screeches, making out like her whistle register is some kind of cat screech. No one really hates regular whistling, everyone loves to whistle everyone once in a while and Mariah just happens to be able to do it with her voice, not just her lips (though it would be funny if she said she could not whistle).

Yay, lots of Mariah fans!

She really is the number one female vocalist for me. There are TONS of female singers I love but there's just something about Mariah's voice that I could never tire of listening to. A certain soothing, relaxing quality. I love the clear, soft tone of her voice, and the incredible range. Even when she's belting out notes she never sounds strained or harsh to me, unlike some of the other "diva" singers like Celine, Whitney, Christina, etc. I do like these other aforementioned singers, sure, but something about their voices can grate on me at times. Whitney often sounds very strident as does Christina, quite harsh voiced. Celine often sounds like she has her mouth full of porridge when she sings, very foghorn like, lol. But not Mariah. She has a silk like quality tone to her voice. One other singer who has that same effortless and smooth velvety quality of voice to me was the great Nat King Cole.

Sure, not everyone appreciates her, and I certainly haven't liked all her music throughout her career. I think some of the stuff she did in the late 90's/early 00's was quite bland. But overall I think she's created a brilliant body of work over the past 20 years. Long may she continue making music!

Glad to see Mariah's not lacking in support, she often gets completely misjudged talent-wise.

It's performances like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WNxn7hOFbE that make me realise what a 'one in a million' she is.

mushymanrob... the fact is that closing your mind to melisma, however sensibly you've reasoned it in your mind, is actually closing the door to a wealth of potential enjoyment from many brilliant artists.
