The organisers' expense.

Even around £2.2m assuming that's the total figure per World Cup is pushing it, although around the same rate as Setanta/ESPN paid per Premier League game.”

The BBC reportedly paid £55m for the 2010 FIFA World Cup rights (and will do so for the 2014 World Cup), which works out as approximately £2m per match as well as production costs.

Deal Or No Deal (showing as due to start on my Virgin box at 4.30pm, and in the Radio Times at 4.30pm) bizarrely has started at 4pm.

I think the Channel 4 News has been extended from 25 minutes to 55 minutes due to the Japan tsunami. BBC News has been extended by 5 minutes meaning it finishes at 22:20.

Cheers D.M.N., just switched to Channel 4 +1 to see what was happening...
"Due to our coverage of the Japanese earthquake, our schedule has changed. Time Team is now at 5pm, followed by an extended Channel 4 News at 6pm..."

To be fair most of the United games have been no brainers this season. Indeed I think ITV have had more luck this year than last with how the draw has played out - but it does kind of highlight how important that first pick is, and how beyond it extra games can be more of a hindrance than a bonus - and though people are quick to pin the blame for the downfall of the FA Cup on ITV, I think the BBC having three games a weekend when they had the rights did it no further as each extra game shown is less attractive and somewhat devalues the magic of the FA Cup.

That seems more reasonable (so £110m assuming a 50/50 split with ITV) - would be interesting though how much it would be valued at if the BBC and ITV were to bid against each other and whether sharing the rights has kept the price down or actually artificially raised the price, especially when there is no realistic rival bid coming from C4/C5.

Friday

Interesting to see New Tricks continuing to increase, whilst Benidorm does the opposite. 6.4m is still a very strong figure, but slightly worrying it's been falling at quite a fast rate each week. Corrie & Emmerdale look a little low too.

Slight increase for The Mentalist I think and I reckon it should continue to increase as more people realise its on new episodes.

I caught Friday Night Dinner for the first time the other day and it really didn't feel like Ch4 material at all. It felt very Friday night BBC1 8.30pm material (without the swearing) and I can see why it's falling.

Must be April 4th, hopefully back-to-back with The Hotel Inspector like we predicted. It seems they are starting promo for both nice and early.

They can't be appearing the week before as there's nothing for either in the press pack and the provisional schedule for 28th March suggests a movie will be airing on that night:

20:00 The Gadget Show
21:00 TBA possibly The Invasion [2007]
22:55 TBA

Hopefully from the 4th the schedule will be:

20:00 The Gadget Show
21:00 The Hotel Inspector
22:00 The Walking Dead

A real ratings winner right there. Channel 4 will be vulnerable on Mondays without One Born Every Minute and the giant turkey that is The Event coming back. BBC Two will also be vulnerable after the 4th when University Challenge bows out for another series.

While we wait for the overnights, like what I posted last month, here's a look at how the four main broadcasters did in the BARB Monthly Shares for February 2011:

BBC
BBC1: 20.5% (Feb 2010: 20.5%), BBC2: 6.8% (7.5%), BBC3: 1.3% (1.4%), BBC4: 0.6% (0.5%), BBC HD: 0.2% (0.2%), BBC News: 1.1% (0.8%), CBBC: 0.8% (0.7%), CBeebies: 1.3% (1.3%)
--> Total: 32.6% (Feb 2010: 32.9%)

ITV
ITV1: 16.9% (16.9%), ITV1+1: 0.6% (n/a), ITV2: 2.3% (2.2%), ITV3: 2.6% (2.2%), ITV4: 1.0% (0.8%), CITV: 0.3% (0.4%)
--> Total: 23.7% (Feb 2010: 22.5%)

Channel 4
C4: 7.5% (7.1%), E4: 1.8% (1.7%), Film4: 1.2% (1.1%), More4: 1.2% (1.1%), 4Music: 0.3% (0.3%)
--> Total: 12.0% (Feb 2010: 11.2%)

Channel 5
C5: 4.7% (4.8%), Fiver: 0.6% (0.5%), Five USA: 0.9% (0.8%)
--> Total: 6.2% (Feb 2010: 6.1%)

It was a strong month for the commercial broadcasters, with all of them up year-on-year in terms of their market share.

First of all starting with the BBC, as a collective broadcaster they were down 1% vs. February last year. BBC1 actually held up very well and was steady compared to last year and most of the digital channels were up, especially BBC News which posted an impressive +38% gain y-o-y. But BBC2 had a poor month, down 9% vs. last year (in spite of Top Gear airing in Feb) and this pulled down the BBC overall share. According to the data I have, I believe it was BBC2's joint fourth worst month since 2005, possibly ever.

ITV were up 5% year-on-year. Like BBC1, ITV1 was flat vs. same month last year. All its digital channels grew apart from CITV which was down. The best growth %-wise was ITV4 with its +25% gain - the movies it showed generally proved more popular than the previous year. Also, once again ITV3 was ahead of ITV2 with an even bigger lead than the previous month, and it looks like ITV3 could take the #1 digital crown this year if it continues doing well for the rest of the year.

Channel 4 were the broadcaster up the most y-o-y, rising +7%. The main C4 channel also was the only terrestrial channel to gain share (+6%) helped by hits like Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, Embarrassing Bodies and One Born Every Minute. None of its digital channels lost share - its main three (E4, More4, Film4) all had good months so it turned out to be a strong month for C4 as a whole. I believe as a overall broadcaster, it was Channel 4's best February since at least 2004.

Channel 5 were up 2% compared to Feb 2010, it was the two digital channels which helped them grow their market share with Fiver (+20%) and Five USA (+12%). Home & Away, Fiver's biggest programme, was down y-o-y so it looks like other parts of the schedule performed relatively well to pull up their share. The main C5 channel was slightly down -2% vs. same month in 2010.

Thanks for that rzt. Just to expand on the growth of Channel 5's digital channels, their head Kate Barnes had this to say about their performance in an interview with Digital Spy this month:
Quote:
“"On 5USA we've just had our best week ever. We've just achieved our first 1% share for the week, so obviously that has now set a benchmark. We would like to grow them both as much as we possibly can. In terms of our competitors, we are younger than them and they took time to achieve the heady heights of their ratings, and we're growing. USA grew 18% last year and each year is an increase."”

That's exactly what I said a few weeks ago and I was shot down by a poster here...I can't remember who...but whoever you are...it's not just me now.

Obviously it premiered with a pretty good audience, but it really would sit well before Have I Got News For You on a Friday - infact, if Channel 4 don't renew it (unlikely), the BBC should pick it up!

Maybe the decline of ITV1 and the rise of ITV3 is telling ITV something: people prefer their back catalogue of shows to their current material. TBH ITV1 seems to have a habit of squeezing every last drop out of their few hits, 3 hours of DOI was too much last week and the Corrie 8.30 episode on a Monday was supposed to be temporary but has become more or less permanent

Lower than I was expecting for Let's Dance, down 1.4 share points on last year's final, level in terms of audience numbers. Given these shows normally peak for the finals (as it did last year) and the heats have generally been well up on last year, I thought the result would be around 400-500k higher than that.

more back catalouge is hardly a plan for long term success.

How do you guys think Waking the Dead will perform tonight? It's the start of the final series and it's always got great audiences. I'll predict around 7m.

What's with the BBC's awful treatment of The Tudors by the way? The ratings seem pretty good and yet it keeps getting pushed back in the schedules to later and later timeslots:

19th Feb - 10pm
26th Feb - 10:30pm
5th March - Not Shown
12th March - 10:45pm
19th March - 11pm

Ironically, Nick Knowles hosting a show that some people find confusing got more bums on seats than the FA Cup.

Take Me Out has reached the magic 20% share, almost a cert to be recomissioned. Paddy and his girls has beaten Ant & Dec for a fourth consective week.

Firstly DoI was on 2 and a half hours last week, not three hours?! As for the Monday Corrie 20.30 episode, that was originally introduced in 2002 and became permanent in 2003. So this is it's 9th year in that slot. It's permanent, not more or less permanent.

---------------------------------------------

As for last night. The decline of TV Burp this series should be setting alarm bells going off at ITV HQ as 4.4m (4.6m inc. +1) is not a good figure for a show that is for sure capable of 6m in that slot. Solid enough for Take Me Out, with almost 5m (inc. +1) and the only bright spot in ITV1's Saturday night line up. PTB needs to be axed and Saturday Night Takeaway needs to return. The football did well, but I did expect a higher average. And Let's Dance put in a good 7m+.

Pretty awful format though to be fair. It reminds me of the latter stages of The Million Pound Drop where educated guesswork is key rather than actual intelligence. It's dumbed down TV and not a proper quiz. OK so it's relatively watchable stuff, but not very fun to play along with. Bring back In It To Win It!
