Too true. The BBC cuts are desperate news for the FA - there's much less money and almost no competition left in the FTA market now. Of course, they can sell more to Pay TV, but at least the England home qualifiers and most probably one FA Cup tie per round will have to stay FTA.

The BBC can't go bidding substantially - if at all - and in that context ITV are the only realistic game in town. And they won't want to write off another 50m. In fact, they'd probably quite like to recoup some of it...
Indeed.

But the question is how big a drop in revenue can the FA bear?

I'm sure they will want to keep as much FTA as possible. But if ITV bid substantially less (and BBC doesn't bid) then there must be a chance that the FA will be forced to move some content to Pay.

I guess England friendlies would be the most likely candidate, followed by some FA Cup. The problem is that if 1st picks stay FTA it's hard to see Sky being interested one 4th pick per round (ESPN already has 2nd, 3rd and 5th).

So the FA is potentially in a very awkward position.

The FA still have huge debts to pay off on the ''new'' Wembley. But the bubble had to burst some time.

The problem for CNN and Sky is that outside a select few strands they attract far fewer viewers than their rivals for the day-to-day rolling news.
But their audience is younger and more advertiser friendly. After ITV3, BBC News has the highest percentage of older viewers of the 30 most viewed channels.

Also, BBC News is available to everyone who has Freeview as it's on a PSB Mux. Sky News, being on Mux C is available in fewer homes and it's not on Freesat.

Tonight's CNN Piers Morgan interview with Simon Cowell has been pre-empted by a special on the Japanese situation according to The Sun.

That looks a bit low for Waking The Dead. Maybe Law and Order will hold up OK after all? It's still a good figure of course but with HD included it seems Wild at Heart wasn't dented at all.

Is that the lowest rating WTD opener ever?

That is low for Waking the Dead. I was expecting 7m myself.

Maybe people prefer to record both parts and watch them in one go? The figure may be higher tonight if people are catching up on iPlayer too...

But even Silent Witness didn't go as low as 5.9m did it?

I think so, and it must be one of it's lowest ever ratings too. With stiff competition from Dancing on Ice (including the final) and either Lewis or Vera (with an hour's head start), it isn't going to get any easier for it.

Pretty low for WTD-no doubt it will timeshift well, but it doesn't look like it will pose a huge threat to ITV, especially considering last nights lineup wasn't dented.

DOI seems stuck around the 8m barrier and I think it's not going to increase from here now & in future years, unless one show is moved back to Saturday and there definitely needs to be a rearrangement of the Q1 weekend schedule next year, especially with Saturdays underperforming.

Awful night for Ch5, but I think Phone Booth has been shown several times before.

Possibly for a season opener, but it is by no means its lowest rating ever.

It's pretty much bang on what I expected - around 6m - due to the BSI scheduling decision to start it midway through a popular competing ITV drama.

Yes, I know South Riding debuted to a slightly better 6.6m in the same slot, but it also benefitted from a Top Gear lead-in on the hour (if you see what I mean, "junctions-wise"), and then fell away once TG finished its run. It was also a new drama, not one in its 9th series, which had already seen a sizeable reduction in its audience from its peak.

I do think WTD could have been better served by a Monday/Tuesday slot, or waiting until DOI/WAH had finished.

But it should timeshift OK, and get a mid to high 6m figure. Decent enough.
