That was a bit different though as in 2006 when The Innocence Project was on Thursdays 8pm was a much better slot for BBC1, probably their best of the week, because it had the 'stEnders lead-in and was only opposite The Bill on ITV, rather than the soaps, so they could launch things like Waterloo Road and Bleak House there. In fact I thought they might show Doctor Who there when it started.
The convenient thing about The Innocence Project was it started it on November so they could simply drop it and pretend it was for Christmas, and everyone had forgotten about it by the time it came back in January. But it was supposed to be a long runner.
As for being ratings chasing, the Beeb have done this with dramas before. There was Castles in 1995, an "experimental" new soap which ran Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8.30 for three months, but flopped so badly they moved it to 7pm on Sundays.

Looks like ITV can't be bothered with the BAFTAs anymore, they last showed them in 2006 I think. The film BAFTAs have been on BBC1 for a decade now, ITV last showed them in 1998, then after the Beeb did them in 1999, they went to Sky, but that never worked out for them (I remember in 2001 they had highlights the following night on the Beeb) so they ended the contract early and gave them back to the Beeb after two years, and they've been there ever since.
Before 1998, of course, there was only one BAFTAs, with both the film and the telly, but seemingly they weren't rating well enough, I know ITV showed the 1996 one at 10pm on a Sunday, and the Beeb showed the 1997 one at 10pm too - on a Tuesday! And two and a half hours long! The only thing anyone remembers about that one is that Lenny Henry died on his arse as host.
In the case of the Brits, ITV and the Brits seem happy enough to renew the contract every few years, I suppose if the Beeb wanted it back they could if they bid enough.
