Funny all the same how Robbie only got excited about +1 channels around about January 12th, 2011. If I was a conspiracy theorist, I might be getting ideas about that.


Also funny that we dont hear much about The One Show over taking Emmerdale these days. Apart from the day after the royal engagement was announced of course. More paranoia from me perhaps............

Also funny how despite all the fuss, the +1 ratings figures made bugger all difference to the ITV1 ratings last night. Storm in a teacup really.

Perhaps unfair in terms of audience share, but isn't the show more important to readers than the channel...

Its only ever been you who has made any comment about The One Show being expected to take over Emmerdale. Its like saying QI was moved to BBC1 to overtake Corrie or Daybreak was meant to be an improvement on GMTV.

Of course we all know that your a big One Show fan, every time anything happens on the show you comment on the fact "you caught it by accident".

Then the only "fair" comparison is the total viewing for the week, including omnibus, second channel and VOD viewing. I guess we could have a stab at that for EE (because their iPlayer stats are eventually published), but not for Emm or Corrie etc (unless ITV have started publishing itv.com programme stats on a regular basis?).

Enmerdale seems to have recovered as this time last year The One Show was very close in the ratings. I think the biggest mistake The One Show made was Adrian and Christine leaving as their replacements are dull.

It's extremely biased in favour of channels who have a +1 service.

Unless you include the figures for Eastenders from BBC3 repeats and the Sunday omnibus, it isn't really appropriate to just say "Corrie achieved 11 million viewers last night but 2 million watched it an hour later on ITV+1 but 8.8 watched it live on ITV1. However only 8.42 million watched EastEnders on BBC1" while totally disregarding that another near million watched it on BBC3 at 10pm and that another 2-3 million will watch it the Sunday omnibus!

ITV1 have so obviously created a +1 channel to inflate their viewing figures. But ITV1 is a channel in its own right and ITV+1 is a seperate channel to this.

Thats very kind of you, though some more cynical posters would say that by not naming names or posting anything to back up those claims that you were making it up.

Surely that has its disadvantages too - people might not watch it live but watch it an hour later instead so first showing is deflated.

Nobody's going to watch the same thing again on +1 having just watched something (apart from a few mad Glee viewers perhaps).

Nevertheless, sometimes I think maybe it's unfair to report +1's at all with regards to your argument - but then I think ITV and Channel 4 do pay to have these platforms.

Maybe it is unfair to report +1's especially with regards to the live broadcasts. Take A Question of Sport for example. You could say that the Monday edition gets 3 million viewers and the Friday repeats get 4 million viewers. But it is never reported that A Question of Sport gets 7 million viewers. I know it is on the same channel but surely all repeats of all programmes shown in the same week should be treated fairly across the board regardless of what channel they are on. Otherwise the unfair bias will continue and eventually people will no longer regard the ratings as interestingly as they do now.

The overnights are a record of LIVE viewing. It's therefore wrong for any channel to add the +1 figure to the audience that watched it an hour earlier on the main channel.

It's fine to say "11 million people wached Corrie last night", but wrong to say "11 million people watched Corrie on ITV1 last night", if half a million of those viewers watched on +1....because it is a seperate channel. This is not complicated.

This is what I was implying but only if the same can be said "Nearly 10 million people watched EastEnders last night" if the BBC3 and iPlayer figures were added on too. But They don't say that. They list the BBC1 figure as being the official viewing figure and BBC3's are recorded seperately.

I don't think The One Show was ever "very close" in the ratings. On the odd day once in a blue moon, it might've been a million behind but generally it's been at that 18-22% mark, while Emmerdale has stayed 32%+.

Been looking on BARB and you're sort of correct that The One Show's ratings are down year-on-year. Around this time last year, quite a few of the episodes were rating in the mid 5's whereas recently, it has rarely gone over 5m (usually it's in the 4.5-5.0m bracket). But that drop could be due to certain factors such as really bad weather last January with snow which boosted TOS's ratings and that could skew the decline even more than it actually is.


Overnights are Live + Same Day viewing. But I know what you mean.

I'd more or less forgotten about TOS since Christine finished. That girl must be kicking herself for going to ITV to host Flopbreak- though maybe not as the money is good regardless.

Ouch at EastEnders though, almost 2m behind it's northern rival and almost beaten by it's rural rival. The soap looks to be going through a bad patch

They need a storyline involving someone either leaving the square or returning to the square to get the ratings back up!

It happens. Corrie is watched by a mostly northern, working class and ageing audience, for whom it is a religion and part of their upbringing, and who don't have much time for iPlayers, iPads and Sky Plussing.

EastEnders isn't. It therefore fluctuates more than Corrie.

News to me.

I might have wound you up now and then about how close they were getting on the odd occasion, when TOS was at its peak and EmFm wasn't.

There's everything to see - Coronation Street hitting 10m while EastEnders couldn't even muster 9m? Yes, Coronation Street has always beaten EastEnders on a Friday but not by that margin. Especially as it was the end of a (reasonably) big week on EastEnders with the poisoning. Emmerdale only being 200,000 down on it is surprising as well - the gap's never been that close bar a clash.

Comedy Rocks finished low but think it'd do better post Dancing on Ice/The X Factor, though it's arguable whether ITV should keep a show on because it could work off it's lead in. Hustle performed well, though was down on last week - but then yesterday's episode did drag in the final quarter though I notice PJMillar state that the rating stayed steady throughout. Embarrassing Bodies is another strong performer for Channel 4.

EE is more a younger persons soap than dear old Corrie, though where I live a fair proportion of younger women watch it. However, it is true that a lot of its viewers do fall into the C2DE female and Northern categories and also don't forget its very strong gay and lesbian following. Yet I suppose it trends worst among ABC1 viewers in the South.

I'm no longer watching - because of him!
