Not really. It got high ratings and generated a lot of discussion on this thread. So I thought it relevant to mention it.

Just like someone thought it relevant to mention on Saturday night that the Sundays were reporting Cowell and Cole allegedly quitting TXF - another show which generates the odd mention on here from time to time...

That is excellent for South Riding. My guess would have been around 5.5m. I wonder whether it affected The Promise and Being Human?

Could we have a breakdown of SR please? I thoroughly enjoyed it but I've seen comments about 'worthy but dull' so interested in likely retention rate for next week.

I doubt it. South Riding seems to have the same ratings as Lark Rise, although transmitted an hour later.

I read that they start filming series 2 this month, even though Fellowes was reported to have said at Christmas that he hadn't started on any scripts and he would have to burn the midnight oil to get them done in time.

Sounds more like Rushjob Abbey to me...

Not all shows can piggy back on The X Factor now can they George?

Great start for South Riding but the true test will come if it holds its audience. Will it act like Downton Abbey or Outcasts?

Maybe Dancing On Ice was dented. Media Guardian have put these figures up.

South Riding: BBC1, 9pm - 6.6 million/23.9%

Wild at Heart: ITV1, 8.30pm - 6.8 million/23.7%

Dancing on Ice: the Skate-Off, 9.30pm - 6.8 million/24.9%

The Promise: Channel 4, 9pm - 1.2 million/4.7%

Ghost Rider (film rpt): Channel 5, 9pm - 1.4 million/6.2%

Interesting, thanks. All very close.

The Promise holding very well which is pleasing.

Was K Katona leaving last night a cynical ploy to keep viewers away from South Riding?

Blimey, South Riding managed to beat Wild at Heart in terms of audience share. Terrific performance.

DoI slightly ahead but definitely dented, below the magic 7 million.

Beaten by Channel 5's movie repeat though which will be a kick in the teeth for Channel 4 this morning.

Excellent start for South Riding, although I think ITV still held up pretty well.

Glad to see C4 and C5 perform quite alright... shame that The Promise didn't get a better slot.

I'm not sure if the ITV rating includes HD and +1 though but still it was very close.

I'm loving The Promise but I do prefer the grandfather's story with Christian Cooke (so much better than in Demons, which shows that the script was the problem), than the modern day story with Claire Foy.

Why did you dislike it so much? Was it just because it is ITV?

I thought it was a pretty well made piece of drama, as was Upstairs Downstairs. I think it's good for the television industry that a period drama can appeal to a mass audience, means more drama being commissioned and risks taken.

Not sure whether thats a good figure or not for AR. Switching times and new and old episodes must be very confusing. Its not added all that much by shifting into 8.00 and has about held what LRTC was getting in its last few flings.
South Riding is definitely not LRTC, and from what I saw, pretty cheerless stuff-it will be interesting to see what kind of retention it gets. Did well though against ITV's big hitters so that they all become much of a muchness. DOI is not piling on the viewers as the weeks go by in the same way XF and SCD do, in relation to the rest of the big five -its very much on par with IAC.
Good figures again for Top Gear and another 12 million over the BBC channels confirms this at least is a bit of good complementary scheduling.

Very good night for BBC1, it amazes me how it gets over 6m against the Dancing on Ice and Wild at Heart combination.

Quote:
“ITV has snapped up the exclusive rights to show the Royal Variety Performance for the next decade, ending almost 50 years of shared broadcasting of the event with the BBC.

The Royal Variety Performance will be broadcast exclusively on ITV1 until 2021. Since the 1960s ITV and the BBC have shared the rights, broadcasting the show on alternate years.

ITV has also secured the exclusive production rights, again previously handled on an alternating basis with the BBC, for in-house operation ITV Studios.

As we approach the hundredth performance of the Royal Variety Show, this agreement marks the beginning of a new era for the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund," said Laurie Mansfield, honorary life president of the organisation behind the show. "We can look forward to the future with renewed confidence and financial security for the next 10 years."

The first show, originally called the Royal Command Performance, took place in 1912, with the two most recent performances – on ITV1 and BBC1 – attracting audiences in excess of 8 million.

Each year since 2007 the winner of ITV1's Britain's Got Talent has appeared at the Royal Variety Performance.

Quite a coup for ITV to get it exclusive, especially with the somewhat renewed interest in the royals lately, thanks to the wedding this year, 60th Jubilee next year etc. Intresting, because of being one of them royal events I thought it was a bit more like the Xmas message. i.e Buckingham Palace etc deciding rather than ITV/BBC bidding for it. But i suppose thinking about it. it's more of an Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund decsion.

IIRC it does do pretty well ratings wise doesn't it? Around 8m+ on both ITV1 & BBC1 IIRC. Plus because of the BGT winner getting a place on the bill, it seems to fit on ITV1 pretty well. Always seemed that on the years it wasn't on ITV, the BGT winners didn't fit in as well with the rest of the line up.

Brilliant from South Riding given the competition. It did seem to rather dent ITV than elsewhere. Not particularly pleasing numbers for The Skate Off really - but then again, I sort of agree that its a bit late, especially given the length of the main show. I cannot for the life of me understand why they haven't split it over the weekend.

Other stand outs must be Top Gear still holding above 6m and Being Human which sustained its excellent figures.

That Royal Variety move does make a lot of sense for ITV. With the BGT winner appearing, and the useful time of year for ad revenue in the run up to Christmas - it must be worth quite a bit to them.

The officials for w/e 13th Feb are now on, but no top ten for Sky Atlantic again, even though it's in the 'total viewing summary'.

Good figures for Mad Dogs, 1.613m. Wonder how many more watched it on Anytime/Anytime+/Sky Player?

It appears that BBCHD and ITV1HD are still suffering from being moved from the front page to the fourth of the Sky HD EPG.

The BBC and ITV have alternated with the Royal Variety since 1962, in the previous two years ITV had it exclusively but Bernard Delfont intervened on the BBC's behalf.

My word! Ten years is a long long time and this is somewhat out of the blue. Whilst not sweeping all before it like during the long variety heyday, its going to be very useful in the run up to Christmas.
Im very surprised, the BBC is supposed to be into events that bring the public together but clearly so is ITV , and the BBC is being muscled out it seems-certainly regarding half of this "event". I wonder if there is any shock at BBC HQ.
