Mrs Brown's Boys has gotten a mostly positive reaction on the thread so it'll be interesting how it does, I thought it was good but it's weird that it was put it in a post news slot rather than paired with another comedy.

I can understand why it was given a 10.35pm slot given the brilliantly foul language, but the Beeb should have had the confidence to put this out at 10pm Saturdays before MOTD. It has been a smash in Ireland in a late Saturday slot, no reason it couldn't have been here. Bet it won't get more than 2-2.5m in the slot it's been given, unless word of mouth turns it into a hit. Hope this grows on the British viewing public as much as it did in Ireland. Having said that, Wikipedia says it won its slot every week when it aired from 1st January over there. |

The Exorcism of Emily Rose trending at #3 on Twitter. Hope it does well, it's a good film. Haven't watched Channel 5 in a very long time, but the hideous 5 watermark in the corner is very distracting.
The new C5 DOG has been toned down a lot since it was introduced on Valentines Day and is barely noticeable now if you concentrate on the programme. |

Another week, another win for Neighbours. Nice to see Neighbours doing well though. Does anyone know if it was the top digital programme at all?
http://www.tvcentral.com.au/2011/02/...february-2011/ It is no1 on the digital networks, 2nd is Heartbeat on 7Two |

Was expecting it to be crap, but it was superb and I loved every minute of it.

I think it would be a good companion for Miranda if it gets a second series although I imagine it'll happen in Ireland as it was a huge hit for RTE. Wonder who put up most of the budget? |

I expect WILTY numbers, the competition post news isn't great aside from the odd show from Channel 4 or 5.

It was billed on the closing credits as a BBC production for RTE. Where was it actually recorded - RTE or BBC ?
Which makes you wonder if the studio audience for the recording of this very Irish comedy were Glaswegians, or Dubliners flown in. |

Not that it makes 2.7m any less pathetic. Presumably Biggest Loser got something well north of 5m with the relentless promotion ITV has been giving it over the past week? Decent opening for Mrs Brown with 2.6m - hope it can push on through 3m in coming weeks on word of mouth/catch-up viewing. |

Not surprising Outcasts went up, much better episode last Tuesday, shame it started so slow.

And this is why Outcasts is being shunted from Monday nights. Silent Witness was beating Biggest Loser and Outcasts is trailing it. It's not even getting 4m.
Last summer, albeit in different circumstances, Luther dipped to around 3m and got a recommission! |

I think the BBC are onto a long-term winner with Mrs Brown's Boys. It's not going to be a critical success but having watched it and from the reaction on various websites, the majority of viewers really liked the first episode. I can see it being one of those shows which starts slow but builds its audience ratings-wise every series. I wouldn't be surprised if tonight's episode did about the same as the slot average (or maybe slightly better), the rest of the series holding pretty steady (with strong iPlayer numbers too), the BBC recommissioning it for the same slot next year, and through word-of-mouth (and new viewers who may have caught it via repeats and DVD), it building its audience in series 2 before a potential switch to a more prime-time slot (if it's possible!) for series 3. Yeah I know it's weird to speak about it that far ahead even before the first episode ratings are out but it's got a lot of potential and I think it's a show the BBC want to nurture and have long-terms plans for. I'm glad the BBC have put it in a 10:35pm slot so there's less pressure on it to immediately perform and it can establish a vocal fanbase who can help it grow in the ratings, rather than putting in a more high-profile slot where it could've found it really difficult to match much higher expectations. I know it's been a massive hit in Ireland so they may continue making it even if it's not a success in the UK, but I'm pretty confident it will be.

I'm just making the fairest comparison which would've been last Monday's episode. Last Tuesday's episode was up against completely different, and much tougher, competition: a combined ITV1+C4 competition of 11.3m compared to the Monday's ~6.5m. That comparison just wouldn't have been like for like. But if it matters so much to you, yeah it was up 0.1m compared to last Tuesday's episode.

Silent Witness was always going to be an extremely tough act to follow. That show was rating at the very top end of what the BBC can manage in that slot. Crucially Outcasts' audience is stabilising now and it's nearing the end of the run, therefore it was the wrong decision to pull it IMO, especially with just a few episodes left.
Last summer, albeit in different circumstances, Luther dipped to around 3m and got a recommission! Very different circumstances for Luther, ratings fell to 3.1m in the overnights against Britians Got Talent on a Tuesday night In June. |

Yeah, very different circumstances - that particular episode was up against Coronation Street and Britain's Got Talent! It'd have been unfair on the people involved in making the show if the BBC had made a decision just based on that one rating. Every episode of Luther which didn't clash against ITV drama rated over 4m in the overnights. Most of the ratings it had weren't great by any means but I can understand why the BBC renewed it.

The point I was making was there seems to be a very fine line between what the BBC deems worthwhile and what the BBC deems as a flop. I knew somebody would pick me up on the competiton Luther had for that episode, but I'm sure numerous episodes in that series rated in the 3m range as well, so it's not as unfair as it sounds. It didn't perform that well at all and actually shed more viewers across the run than Outcasts has - I think it launched with around 6m and ended up around 3-3.5m. Despite this it got a recommission and Outcasts got dumped out of primetime - if you guys think that is fair then we'll have to agree to disagree, but I don't.
Episode 1: 6.54 million Episode 2: 5.93 million Episode 3: 4.76 million Episode 4: 4.71 million Episode 5: 3.80 million Episode 6: 4.34 million It fell quite a bit but stabilised at around 4.5m. There is a huge difference between 4.5m in June than 3m in February. Just my personal opinion but I thought Luther was bloody good too. |

It didn't really shed more viewers than Outcasts. Luther from episode 1 to episode 6 fell 2.1m (-36%). Outcasts has dropped 1.8/1.9m (-40%) by episode 5, and that's after a low start anyway. The declines are similar but more importantly Luther managed to have an audience of about 1.5m more on average up against tougher competition and at a worse time of the year ratings-wise. That's not saying that Luther should've been recommissioned (it was one of those 50/50 ones).

yes of course given that its been exactly 4m every week
Mrs Browns Boys is only going one way & it is upwards ![]() The reality is they knew Outcasts was sunk, dead in the water and moving to a graveyard slot, and they wanted to capitalise by taking Biggest Loser to a new level. By all accounts, it seems to have failed. For either of BBC1 or ITV1 to get 3.7m in a plum 9pm weekday slot, when the other has a major critical and ratings flop on its hands, is not very impressive. Re Mrs Brown, I note that at the start of the Mrs Brown's Boys thread, you dismissed the show as "end of the pier rubbish" - admittedly at Christmas, a week before it first aired in Ireland and became a massive ratings hit there.

I'm not saying it shouldn't have been recommissioned either, just trying to explain why I think the Outcasts decision was harsh. |
