Having the same problem - keeps on showing the green downloading light but nothing. Was wondering whether it was because I have kept on reverting to 4.09 but seemingly not if you are having the problem. I could put it back to 6.01 but then if it does update to 6.54 the dreadful 6.01 will be only available alternative.

If you have a good signal then the likely problem is the 1000uF capacitor on the power board is on its way to failing. This capacitor smooths the 12V DC to the tuning circuits that are used to pick up the download. If the check sum at the end of the download has an error ( due to data corruption caused by the ripple on the 12V DC supply) the new software is not loaded into the box and is discarded.
I have repaired two of these boxes recently both would not download new software. The latest one had been stuck on software version 2.99. Both downloaded latest software after the capacitor replacement. |

Thanks for you reply
are these the caps you are talking about?? http://www.kafkasworld.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5824 One controls the smoothing of the 12v DC to the Hard drive and the tuning circuits. The other controls the 5V logic for the Hard drive and USB socket. You can get the caps from Ebay. |

will these be okay to use as you quote 25v ![]() are these the ones you are talk about ? maplin code DT70M It is clear by the number of failures that 16V is probably not good enough. Most elecrolytic capacitors will fail in time. I think the ones originally fitted had a lifespan of 1000hrs at 105 degrees C. Most 25V capacitors are rated at 2000hr at 105 degrees C.and due to the slightly larger size will not get as hot as the smaller 16V You can get special Panasonic capacitors off E bay with a 5000hrs at 105 degrees C rating. for less than Maplins price. You can fit 16V which is what was fitted, its just that I fit 25V for better reliability! If you are not sure about the difference in Capacitor voltages then I do not think you should be attempting removing and replacing these capacitors. Polarised capacitors are known to explode if connected incorrectly! |

As a postscript.
I think Maplin are out of stock with the 16V capacitors but have 25V If you are unsure about capacitor voltages, I do not think you should be attempting this repair, polarised capacitors will explode if fitted incorrectly! |
