Mobile phone signal

Can someone who understands these sort of things please explain to me why my phone fluctuates between no signal and full signal when I have it on the table in front of me and am not touching it?

I would imagine the mast nearest to you reaches capacity so your phone has to use one further away.

It could be it is switching between network types e.g. going from full 2G signal to low 3G signal. Especially relevant for the likes of O2.

Atmospheric conditions play a part too, like cloud cover and pressure. Although that would only account for slight variations, so it's probably that plus the mast capacity thing and the 2G/3G switching thing combined.
