21 = Sinead O’Connor = 12.16% (Round Two)
Just missing out on a place in the top 20, is Sinead – who becomes the highest ranked of the O’Connor clan. She is probably the character out of the O’Connors barring the axed Rob who has the most potential for storylines. Hopefully the axing wont impede on her future on the show as she is quite popular on DS and the whole family really is crying out for a proper and decent storyline – hopefully this will happen soon.

20 = Riley Costello = 12.22% (Round Two)
Kicking off the top 20 is The first of three Costello’s in the top 20; and first up is oldest son Riley who comes bottom of the three. Riley was one of the main focus’ of the Hollyoaks Later series – however on screen he had a slight quiet time before hooking up with man-eater Mercedes. Since getting together with Mercedes we’ve seen him be part of the love triangle involving his dad. I can see this all coming out at the wedding along with Heidi and Gaz’s kiss/ affair.

19 = Carl Costello = 13.04% (Round Two)
Love-rat Carl is next up who follows on from Riley. Carl and the rest of the Costello’s were part of the major revamp in the show and probably the most successful family to be introduced in the past year. Despite him coming to Hollyoaks for a fresh start it hasn’t taken Carl long to stray and is currently in a love triangle with Mercedes and Riley. Carl is an interesting character IMO, his reaction to the Jason situation has been great to see and whilst he clearly has no restraint from playing the field it does show he has a much more softer, human side to him.

18 = Rhys Ashworth = 13.48% (Round Two)
The longest serving member of the Ashworth clan and the only one to survive the might axe (until Suzanne’s return) – Rhys ranks next! He’s been involved with incest and spiking his brothers drink resulting in a court case – however since getting together with Jacqui I think its helped the character a lot (It’s a shame he decided to bang Cheryl though). With the Gilly/ Jacqui rape story looming it will be interesting to see which side Rhys sides with and how his relationship with both characters will end up.

17 = Jack Osborne = 13.75% (Round Two)
One of the longest serving characters and for an oldie in Hollyoaks he has ranked quite highly. Jack in his time has been part of some big storylines including faking his own death. He has been married to Frankie for a while now and I think him and Darren have got a great relationship. I’ve always liked Jack as a character and I think its good to see him ranked in the top 20 and to still be going strong on the H’Oaks.

16 = Tony Hutchinson = 13.90% (Round Two)
The longest serving Hollyoaks cast member comes in at number 16 this year. Tony has been in the show since the start and although doesn’t finish in the top 10, I think this is a good ranking for a character who hasn’t had the greatest year – what with being caught up in the business with the Sharpe’s and his restaurant burning down etc. Hopefully 2011 will see the character come back more to the forefront with the return of Cindy to the show and also the return of Mandy from her brief absence. 2011 – the year of Tony’s ex-wives!

15 = Carmel Valentine = 14.29% (Round Two)
IIRC Carmel won this when I believe ThaGazBoi did this a few years ago – however this year Carmel manages to nab a spot in the top 15. Carmel had a lucky escape from an eternity of boredom when Theresa gunned down her husband. However since then the character of Carmel hasn’t really recovered. In fact given some of the material Carmel has been given I’m surprised to see her this high. However it must be said this week Carmel has been great – especially her confrontation with Warren. Hopefully the writers can recapture what made her so brilliant in the first place.

14 = Theresa McQueen = 15.15% (Round Two)
Is she alive… is she dead? Who knows, but Theresa comes in at Number 14 – possibly had this taken place after this weeks episodes she may have pushed for a top 10 finishing. Theresa was the unlikely killer of dreary Calvin (really we should be celebrating her murder), for the past year we have seen her harber the secret and with various plot twists. As I said above we don’t know yet if Theresa lives or dies – either way she has come into her own this past week and it will be interesting to see what happens next with Warren and Ethan.

13 = Jason Costello = 15.29% (Round Two)
The highest ranked member of the Costello clan comes up next as Jason ranks at 13. The whole Jasmine/ Jason storyline is a long running storyline which has been going since the character debuted. Paul Marquess has said that the storyline will progress far into 2011 and beyond and seeing as it’s a way of life, the character of Jason and indeed Jasmine will always have one central storyline. It will be interesting to see how far Hollyoaks go with the GID storyline and how much they can push the boundaries with it.

12 = Warren Fox = 2.42% (Round Three)
As with Theresa, possibly had this comp started this week then Warren may have been in the top 10 characters – however he has to make do with being top 12. Warren recently returned from the dead and has since become embroiled with Cheryl, Brendan and more importantly the whole Calvin killing. He and Theresa seem to have some bond which we’ll probably see more of if she survives. At times I think Warren has a tendency to be slightly caricature – however he is a good character to have in the show and the character has done a lot in his time – you can see why he was brought back by Mr Marquess.

11 = Myra McQueen = 2.58% (Round Three)
The head of the McQueen clan just misses out on a top 10 placing by coming in 11th place. Myra has had to put up a lot from her kids – adultery, murders, infidelities, killings and a whole host of other things. The character though has one strength of loyalty and always trying to keep the family together. The introduction of the McQueen clan completely changed Hollyoaks IMO and its difficult now to not think of them not in it and like the Dingles in Emmerdale or Mitchells in Eastenders they are part of the fabric of the show now.

So we now enter the top 10...

10 = Bart McQueen = 424 pts
Nabbing a place in the top 10 and being the highest ranked teen character on the show is Bart McQueen. A character who despite being introduced to the show not that long ago already has a quite a number of fans and has been part of the main GID storyline. He has a good basis with the McQueen family and his relationship with Jason/ Jasmine is also an interesting character point and it will be good to see how it will develop into 2011 as well.

09 = Mercedes Fisher = 430 pts
Personally I was quite surprised to see Mercedes make the top 10 – although saying that she is part of one of the most popular families on the soap and is (for Hollyoaks) a long term character. Mercedes is a bit of a man-eater and whilst late last year we saw a much more tender side to her character when Malachy – however since then she has returned to her usual ways – playing both Riley and Carl. 2011 should see her marry Riley and then the whole shock of her and Carl will come out – typical Hollyoaks

08 = Amy Barnes = 587 pts
8th Place goes to recent returnee Amy Barnes – a character who possibly was originally meant to meet her maker in the fire. However she survived and has returned to try and claim Lee Hunter. The character has been through a lot in her time – multiple teenage births, a mad mother, domestic abuse at the hands of Ste and the death of her sister. Hopefully 2011 will see a much more heavy Amy year – by the ranking here she has her DS fans who want to see more of her in the show.

07 = Cheryl Brady = 588 pts
The first of 2 Brady’s in the top 10 – see’s Cheryl place at number 7. The larger than life character has seen a lot in her quite brief time in Hollyoaks. We’ve seen Cheryl be quite unlucky in love since she turned up and with her hooking up with Warren, no doubt that will continue well into 2011. Cheryl has yet to find out about Brendan and Ste and no doubt will be a big point of 2011. So watch out Cheryl – 2011 will probably see you continue to get hurt!

06 = Nancy Hayton = 590 pts
One place outside the top 5, is long term character Nancy Hayton. Nancy had quite a quiet 2011 until she hooked up with Darren. She has been in the show for a while now and has seen his sister die, Jake turn nasty and a lot of her friends die – the latest being India. Recent rumours have suggested she is going to have a strange relationship with someone in the show – so 2011 could set to be a controversial year for Nancy – especially with Darren, Suzanne and the Twins still in the show.

So the top 5 consists off...

Brendan Brady; Ste Hay; Jacqui McQueen; Mitzeee; Darren Osborne;

quite remarkable than Brendan, a fairly new character has made top 5 along longer serving characters!!!

05 = Mitzeee = 636 pts
Into the top 5 and we have Mitzeee – the character with a lot of e’s in her name. She had quite a quiet start when her character was introduced, however since she discovered Brendan and Ste’s relationship she has been quite unstoppable as a character. Playing both Warren and Brendan at their games and sometimes coming out on top. She is quite an interesting character – especially for what she basically is, an it would be so easy for her to be such a 2D characature – however the character comes over incredibly well and will be good to see how much more of an impact the character can have.

04 = Darren Osborne = 734 pts
Darren comes in 4th place! At one time challenging for the win, he settles here for 4th place. The character has had so amny storylines over the years – mainly to do with him screwing up. However I think recently the character has grown up a bit and is really coming into his own. His relationship with both Suzanne and Nancy are great and his grounding with Jack and Frankie is good too. Its nice to see a long standing character still doing well in these rankings and claiming a top 5 place.

I love the top five, so I will be happy whoever wins.

03 = Ste Hay = 743 pts
Ste is next as he bags a place in the top 3. Again a strong challenger for the win at one point, however setlles for the bronze medal. Ste is quite a deep character – having seen his domestic violence streak with Amy, he is now is quite a different place. His recent surge in popularity comes with the character getting it on with Brendan Brady and creating a whole legion of uberfans. The character certainly has a lot of levels to him and his current domestic abuse plot line is interesting – especially seeing a couple of years ago it was the other way round. Hopefully 2011 will see more twists and turns for the character
