Just replaced the HDD on my Humax and noticed that the fan was not powering up. I presume this is normal. If this is the case how often should it come on with normal operation?

Impossible to answer because the fan has smart control. Whether it runs depends on lots of variables.

How hard the cpu is working, for instance recording two HD channels, watching a third HD channel while deleting an existing recording. Makes me feel a bit hot , bit like running a marathon.

If the new HDD is one of the more efficient ones it will run cooler so less need for the fan.

Yes - I think it was about a few cms square - You can harly hear it when running - it is mounted to blow on the hard disk.

I can honestly say I've never noticed it and although I've seen a picture of the insides of one of these boxes I don't actually remember seeing a fan - it may have been attached to the casing that was removed to show the insides.

As my Humax has good airflow around it and as they are such low power users I doubt it's on much.

It's mounted in the hard disc carrier.

So I must have seen it in those photo's on another site where someone shows how to convert the Huamx for an external main drive. And promptly forgotten it.

I've never heard my HDR's fan come on. It's not like a Sky HD box where the fan comes on when the box is doing nothing. Although Sky's version of 'doing nothing' apparently requires 16w of power consumption :-/

Yes - The fan needs to be disconnected to remove the caddy.

My Fan now blows on the cpu heatsink (The drive is external and seperately powered)
