Ripping DVDs and transferring them to iPad

I keep googling and end up downloading alleged "Free" software, only to find I need to pay $30 or $40 for a full license otherwise I will only get 3 mins of a 2 hr movie!

Does anyone know of some genuine software which will do this job really for "free" and do a decent job of it too?

thanks

I use a Mac by the way, not PC

Handbrake:

However you'd need something to first rip the DVD & strip the DRM. I don't know of anything like that for Macs, but I assume it must exist.

I've used MacTheRipper in the past, though always hated the interface. You can't get it [legally] any more for, er, legal reasons.

Other than MTR, RipIt is the only software that'll do what you want (for a reasonable $20) - use in conjunction with Handbrake to generate H.264 vids for import into iTunes for subsequent syncing to iPad.

I am a Mac user mate and use Handbreak.

The Mac version is brilliant, better than the Windows version in my opinion.

Download the free version and then pay for the licence, it's worth it.

Very easy to use, stick in the DVD, select the DVD in Handbreak, choose Apple 'universal' in the settings section and click 'start'.

Once it's finished just take the converted file add it to iTunes.

I have used it loads recently and ripped about 30+ DVD's.

If you get oPlayer lite (Or others which do more or less the same job), which is free, for the iPad, you can use it to playback more or less any video format on the iPad (Including Realmedia!).

- The OP has a Mac.

- The OP would prefer something which is free.

DVD Fab satisfies neither of those.

I use handbrake on my Mac and it has never had a problem doing everything on its own. You don't need other software.

Interesting! The website says it doesn't support removal of copy protection and that the source must be unencrypted.

Maybe for their latest versions but I use an older version that has never had a problem on my Mac decoding a DVD. I rip a lot of DVDs too because I don't typically watch them when I rent them so I simply place them on my iPad for viewing later and then I simply delete them after watching them. Movies I wish to own I buy, the way we all should.

Is DVD Decrypter available for the Mac?

I use it on Windows XP PC and it is very good. Cracks through a lot of the copyright protection and also can handle region 1 discs (or other region than the UK region 2) without having to change your disc drive's region setting (which you can only do 5 times normally).

I then use Handbrake like everyone else suggests.

I use the Apple TV settings, but think that will give a pretty good result on whatever you play on as it will look even better when played on a smaller screen. Rather than encoding just for ipad and iphone, as if you ever do want to watch on a larger screen in the future and it looking crap.

Makes sure you select 'strict' for the aspect ratio otherwise it does some pan and scan style cropping to make it fill the screen and does not look very good, but that's my opinion.

You should really have to touch any of the other settings in Handbrake.

If you want to add to itunes and have artwork etc, you can use MetaX to add art, cast age rating etc in a few easy steps. MetaX is also free.
