Series One. It was such a groundbreaking drama at that time. As the series went on, it was still very enjoyable but it got more ridiculous and was to be taken less seriously..

Series 5 onwards it did start to get pantoish with the amazing Jim Fenner storylines... I loved it though! |

Series 1, 2 and 3 for me, Bad girls at it's absolute best, I think it started to go down hill in series 4 when Shell & Denny had gone on the run and Helen and Nikki had gone and the Peckham boot gang became more dominant.

Tina then left to join the Julies. Al was a loose cannon and hung with anyone available... until she was poisoned. Shell and Denny on the run was ok and was a first for escaping, of course it had to involve the evil genuies Jim Fenner. I felt very cheated when series 3 ended with Nikki Wade and Helen Stewart... it said 'to be continued' and then they never returned or were heard of... you would think they would want Fenner out the service instead of that avidivd that kept popping up. |

Series 1 was fantastic, groundbreaking drama and grittyness at its best with some really shocking stories and scenes such as Rachel who committed suicide in her cell, but I also loved series 3, the opening episode following the aftermath of Dockley stabbing Fenner and Nicki's escape was one of the best eps ever.
It sadly went down hill as the series progressed and once Fenner left it should of ended |

I actually got into Bad Girls quite late into its run (Series 6 I think) and really enjoyed it, but sometime afterwards, I went back and watched the early years, and they are so much better.
I don't think it ever really got bad though, until the last few episodes. The characters just weren't as strong, storylines seemed to be recycled, and the cast came and went. I remember in the last series, there was a whole string of episodes devoted to the new governor and her prisoner daughter, and it just really didn't work, because we barely knew her, let alone cared about her. I read somewhere that Denny Blood was supposed to return for the ninth series before it got cancelled, because they felt they had an unfamiliar cast. I also hated how characters in the later series just left without explanation. (A problem that Shed Productions has a lot over it's shows actually) Kris and Selena were major players for two seasons, got a big cliffhanger ending in Series 6, but were never heard again when the next series started. Di Barker got locked up in Series 7, and then by Series 8, she to was long forgotten. Arun the transsexual inmate also vanished, and Pat's girlfriend. It just seemed all over the place. |

Pat and Natalie fell into the background because of the worst character ever invented in Bad Girls... Janine Nebeski... the actress is very over rated! Denny Blood returning would have been soo great and did anyone ever wish Lauren Atkins became a regular for Fenner! |

Di Barkers exit was truely shocking! After all her devious crimes and helping Jim Fenner, she deserved her fate... but to hear nothing from her again was shocking... she was one of the reasons the show worked so well! Losing Di and Jim in one series was a bad blow.

From my recollection, Pat and Natalie never fell into the background once. Series 7 and 8 pretty much revolved around them to be honest (not that im complaining). There where far worse inmates than Janine IMO. Cassie and Roisin in Series 4 were total borefests, which was a shame because I think Cassie as a stand alone inmate could have been great. And Buki, 3 series and barely an interesting storyline if any at all to be frank. I also wouldn't call Nicola Stapleton (Janine) an actress who is very over rated.
Nah Janine was an awful character, especially with Ricky Buther deciding he wanted to ruin it even more. No Fenner- No Bad Girls. They had once chance to show us what it would be like without Jim... it felt weird but could have went back to it's grittyness! Also where the hell did Kevin Speirs go! |

Actually, in fairness, I personally found Janine to be one of the rare shining lights in the last series. Her storylines were pretty much all done before. (Pregnant inmate, rejected at family funeral etc), but for me she was just about the only one who I bothered to care about in the end. She wasn't the best character, but I think there were plenty worse.
I also don't really understand how you can say Natalie faded into the background. She was like, the main inmate for ages, and Pat was a good foil for her. I actually found Pat to be a bit of a bore. I wanted to like her so much, but she ultimately was just a rival for Natalie, and whenever she did anything else, I found it blissfully boring. (Like her relationship with Sheena) |

I loved how Fenner got rid of Betts, Atkins and Dockley all in the space of one series! To lose 3 major charaters and still have many good season after was a complemnet to the writers in my opinion. |

Loved Bad Girls, guess the first 3 series were the best.
Zandra was my favourite character, shame she was gone by end of Series 2. I hated the fact characters just disappeared with no explanation towards the end. As mentioned above Di was a major player from S2-S7 so to have no real exit was shoddy. I'm glad the Julie's, Sylvia and Tina lasted. I think Shell and Yvonne were missed in later series though. |

Anyone think Wade and Stewart were over hyped becuse they were lesbians/confused... something 'new' for the 90's?

I actually think losing the three women in the one series really set the series into terminal decline. I don't think any of them were properly replaced, and whilst I liked them, the characters who remained in the show just couldn't carry it on their own. (Sylvia, Tina, the Julies etc) |

I kind of get what you mean regarding Helen and Nikki. I liked them, and really enjoyed the story, but I kind of feel that if one of them had been a guy, it wouldn't have been anywhere near as popular a storyline.

(Sylvia, Tina, the Julies etc) Series 8 was a huge problem for me as the 3 orginal ladies of Bad Girl's were shoved in the background... the final episode was awful...should of ended with Jim Fenners ghost. I knew she left at some point, very sad when she died, talk about tragic character! Wish she'd stayed in it for longer, could have done a lot more with her.

I agree that Series 1 - Series 3 being the best due to most of the original cast still being there
Series 4 got dull with Niell and his pointless subplots Series 5 was depressing with Julie's cancer, Yvonne's infamous death etc. Series 6 I thought was turning out to be good again with good characters such as Natalie, Darlene and that wing gov who's name escapes me Series 7 was pretty decent as well with the arrival of Pat and Jim going apeshit on everyone Series 8 just showed how the whole prison went soft and sometimes it wasn't even about the inmates. That's where it truly lost the plot. Awful series |

I wasn't keen on the Cassie/Roisin storyline but the more I've rewatched the series, it's probably one of my favourite stories as it's told so well and the portrayal of a mum separated from her kids feels very realistic and is probably the last realistic story Bad Girls presents to us. The Roisin/Cassie story is one of my favourite stories in Bad Girls history now. Series 3 and 4 were on the whole very good, but by Series 5 it did lose credibility and became a sensationalist drama instead

Series 2 and 3 were good... but there was something missing which didn't make them as good as Series 1. Series 2 started off in excellent shape, but it went downhill a bit after Zandra's death.
