Has the show opened yet in the West End?
I havn't been on here for a long time. All I can see on here are appreciation threads and was wondering has the show opened yet in the West End and is the title Over the Rainbow?
Is Danielle playing Dorothy and has Lloyd Weber wrote some new tunes as he promised? |

Yes, Feb 7, for previews.
No Its called the Wizard of Oz Yes Yes There's 4 new ones. http://www.wizardofozthemusical.com/...sical-numbers/ http://www.wizardofozthemusical.com/about/background/ I'm amazed the owners of Wizard allowed 4 new songs to be added by two very British writers. I don't know of this happening with any other established musical. Delighted Sophie Evans will be filling in for Danielle when she's absent. Sophie should be great in the role. http://www.london-theatreland.co.uk/...ful&order=DESC |

Spoilers below
. . . . . . . . . . ; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ; . . . . . . . . . . ; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Heard audios of the new songs. As Good As Home is stunning, starts softly by Danielle, who sings a couple of verses, is joined by Glinda for a few lines, and then the whole ensemble. Can see it becoming a big hit. There is also a long note at the end sung by the cast, thought it could have been held on for longer, though. Reminds me a bit of A*Dream Is A Wish You Heart Makes, from Cinderella, and it has a similar structure to Love Changes Everything, but if you are speaking in terms of other Lloyd Webber numbers, it is more like All The Love I Have. It's one I can see being sung in ALW concerts, and maybe being released as a single. Wonder of the World for the Wizard is a fantastic song. Takes some time to get used to, but has a beautiful melody. Sounds like one of those dreamy Disney songs that are there in cartoons, the ones where the hero is going on an adventure, and their mentor/guardian sings a song to encourage them, sort of song, a beautiful song. Very clever lyrics, you'd think they were written by the original authors. Michael sings it beautifully. The Witch's song is a showstopper and very funny. The lyrics are very witty, constant reference to shoes and shoe puns 'I want her shoes' 'the shoes, are the key' 'I want the shoes' and 'Bring her to heel', 'suited me best', 'straight to my soul (sole)' and has an extremely high(opera style) note at the end. Hannah Waddingham is amazing. Nobody Understands Me is not much of a song, rather than words set to a beat with a bit sung by Dot 'Nobody Understands Me, Nobody Even Cares, Might as well talk to scarecrows, Should have been born a chicken, then they would have paid attention' ... really catchy though |

I wonder will ALW and Rice release any of the songs as singles.
It worked well for them in the past when the songs became hits in promoting their shows. |

Stopped reading his review when he says in the first sentence he always loathed the Wizard of Oz. Not interested in reading someone who already has a negative bias .
Prefer to read the reviews of the ordinary punter. It looks good from the vid. The other big reviews seem to be 3 or 4 stars. There's a questionmark raised in most of them what ALW wants his Dorothy to do as the singing of OTR seems to be downplayed - even though Danielle showed at the Royal variety that she could do a version with high wow factor. Next Tuesday, will be interesting to see what they have done with Sophie's version -its her first night. She has wow factor too, and is only doing it once a week so she can let go without any issues about straining her voice doing 7 shows a week - have they toned her down too? |

They may need another standby if for any reason Sophie was unable to appear. One of the reviews I was reading says, Danielle is practically on stage for most of the show, which puts a lot of responsibility on an inexperienced, young performer both physically and mentally . |

Didn't know Danielle and Sophie have an understudy. I'm guessing she was not one of the girls that auditioned for OTR.

Can you answer your question, Networkbabe? What kind of performance did Sophie put in?
Too right that review was not popular on the Danielle Hope thread. Talk about making your mind up before seeing the show... Not yet , I have a ticket for Sophie though The few reviews out there on whatsonstage etc were positive and suggested both Dots are similar - but Sophie's only done it once so far.Not sure what ALW is up to. Danielle sems to be being kept away from her wow versions of OTR and OTR is a bit wasted early on for many people. Then when he has the chance to go for a different looking Dorothy, and Sophie can really go for it as she is only on once a week, he seems to have tried to turn her into a standard Dorothy look too with no red hair . Not sure playing safe and giving the public what they will expect is always the right thing to do , but he seems to do it a lot. |

Yes, Sophie was wearing a wig. Apparently she got a standing ovation. We have been discussing it on Danielle's thread.

Here's the clip of Danielle singing it, and I think it sounds lovely, as it did live: http://broadwayworld.com/article/BWW...Album_20110307 I do think it's odd, however, that the one new song they cut out was the one that gave Danielle (and Sophie) a chance to sing something new late in the show. They did let her sing a short reprise of "Over the Rainbow" in her last scene, but it might have been nice for her to have a whole song. |

I don't know when everyone started expecting a "wow" version of the song with a belted last note. The first time I remember hearing it sung that way was on OTR, and I think that was just to give the departing Dots a chance to show off for any casting directors who may have been watching. Judy Garland did not sing it that way in the film, for one thing. It's not at a place in the show where it can be a big showstopping "wow" moment. I did notice, though, that the new arrangement drags the last note out for a long time, so even though it isn't belted, it's still more of a showcase note than it was in the film. I doubt they would change the arrangement for Sophie, since she only plays the role once a week, so I imagine she sings the more muted version with the extended last note as well.

ALW just seems happy recently to rely on a few good songs and a lot of other things going on visually to do the job , and even uses up his more outstanding songs early . Not sure it works when people are watching musicals elsewhere where all the leads have more story, most leads have one or more major songs, first acts end on major numbers, applause gaps are put in to keep the momentum building better , and there's always a big number left for the last stretch and finale. LND I thought was one long wait for Sierra to sing, but ultimately worth it. You may well be right that WoZ needs a big moment late in act two too. |
