People who swap between different phones

Just out of curiosity, if you decide to change phones of a different OS, e.g. iPhone to Android or Blackberry etc, when making your choice, do you factor in that it's going to cost you money if you want to replace your music library?

I've had an iPod for ages (well before I had a smartphone) and so all my music is on iTunes. Even if I wanted to move away from an iPhone (which I don't), surely the costs involved of having to re-purchase that music (the original cds are long gone) will negate any savings made in phone costs.

For me, I'm now forever locked into Apple products because so much money has been invested in the music that I can now only access via iTunes.

But I thought anything bought off iTunes is DRM free so can be copied to any device?

Also your post seems to suggest you ripped a lot of your own CD's into iTunes as well. There is nothing stopping you from copying these onto any other device or playing them with any other music player. They should just be mp3's (if you ripped into that format) so can be copied around like any other file.

Convert them all to MP3, every song on my iPhone is MP3, why tie yourself to the hideousness that is iTunes?

I've sold all my original cds at a car boot sale.

I didn't realise iTunes could be coverted to other formats. I don't really use PCs.

you're a pirate!

Delete those tracks immediately you have no right to that music if you've sold the original CDs....

....most of my music is ripped from CD into MP3 and I can assure you I have never rebought any digital tracks.... though a point you missed is I have now bought games on Android Market and I wouldn't be able to use them if I moved to iPhone (hell freezing over scenario)....

I made a conscious decision not to have an iPhone as I didn't want to useiTunes.

There are alternative programs out there so you don't have to use iTunes with an Apple device.

Music is not a problem. However if you spent a load on apps, I guess you would be reluctant to change platform.

They are not using DRM for some time now, so you could either import the files directly or convert them first. AFAIK the DRM is still used with videos and of course, one cannot reuse apps on another platform either.

I chose Blackberry because it was my 1st proper smart phone & most people at work use it so I can use the BBM to communicate with them. Cost was a factor I have to admit.

I did not want to be locked into a contract paying £30 a month for an iPhone. I just wanted a phone on PAYG & BB suited my needs & available funds. Plus I would probably be single if my wife found out I'd paid £450 + on an iPhone.

I just get bored so i change around to keep interested in a device again, although i am starting to really hate purchasing apps for one platform and not being able to use them on another one!

Unless you have bought *all* of your music from the iTunes store then you shouldn't have a problem. If you've ripped your own CDs into iTunes then you'd have ripped them into MP3 or AAC format which other jukebox software should be able to read. Ripping a CD to MP3 doesn't mean that you're only allowed to play it on iTunes.
