I'm not sure if I just happen to be listening at the right time, but have heard two cases of "not-so-smart-networking" the last few days.
The same pre-recorded link played twice in a row, by Luke Smith on Friday night when he was in for Rich, and the wrong link going out on Bassman's show this afternoon (he introduced the new one from JLo, but Katy B played) |

Back to the ages of DJs..
In real life, women go for men quite a bit older than themselves - so a male presenter 10 years older than the female target should be perfect. 35 year-old housewifes should be happy with mid-40's DJs - maybe 50 or more if they don't sound old. Despite having become Capital, I expect Global really wanted the East Mids to go to Heart like everywhere else (because that's the most profitable demographic) so a slightly older sound there would make sense. |

Surely the point of these target-audience age restrictions in Ofcom formats is to prevent the stations narrowing listener choice by drifting outside these boundaries - ie. to stop the former Trent/Leicester/Ram deciding one day they want to compete directly against Smooth for example. Owners are totally at liberty to superserve any narrow demo within the limits defined by the format.
However, some posters here choose to interpret those format requirements as meaning stations are obliged to target everyone within the defined age range. That simply isn't the case. Quote:

It was part of the fabric of the city. It WAS Nottingham.
Having said that though, I remember when Jo and Twiggy took over from Miller and White back in whenever it was and that seemed like getting rid of a massive show to bring in a couple of newbies. Proof that the audience will get used to change.....given time. |

Capital's desperate attempt to appear showbiz central by making out celebs are randomly "dropping in" for things like cabs, and left behind lip gloss is really cringey. Listeners will surely see through this.
So why waste some good recordings, they do their job well

if Capital Yorkshire ever got its Local Schedule back instead of a lot of Network Shows from London I think Danny Mylo would be a great Addition

Some posters seem to think that it's not possible to successfully target a wide audience demographic with local radio. UTV seem to manage it with Signal...... (awaits being told that it's only because there's no competition, blah blah blah.)
More examples of stations that target a broad audience? |

Absolute rubbish. I worked for UTV for years and they target a very specific demographic just as most other groups do nowadays.

My arse they do. They may have a skew towards a particular section of the market but the only thing you need to have in order to be in the Signal target audience is an ST or CW postcode.
Of course they do have an AM station too. |

Compare My Radio.com puts Capital down as playing 166 unique songs in the last 30 days! A good bulk of those must be played in Dave Kelly's show as daytime's playlist is so very small that listening at work would be painful.
That said, I'm glad Capital are sticking to this Z100 type format - when they added a few older tracks like ghetto superstar in a few weeks back, I thought they were gonna make a knee-jerk reaction to the poor RAJAR figures last quarter; despite the fact that every station seemed to suffer apart from Kiss. They do the tight CHR format well though! |

Kiss 100 did CHR well. Oxford's Passion 107.9 did CHR well. Galaxy did CHR well. Atlantic 252 did CHR unbeatably well. Capital FM does not do CHR well. It plays the Top 40 over and over and over until Genesys is screaming for a rest, with DJs devoid of any personality (and as Atlantic 252 consitently proved, you can slam an insane amount of personality into 15 seconds if you know what you're doing) mixed with rather lacklusture production. And processing that sounds like it's been set up by a deaf person. And a name that screams "LONDON!" in 50-foot-high red big-ass letters to anyone not listening on 95.8. And news which is an insult both to journalists and to those who appreciate good journalism alike - if IRN really think that Capital FM East Midlands are the best newsteam in the country, then that doesn't say a lot for news in commercial radio. I really cannot see how Capital FM will be a success outside of London in its present format, which brings me onto... Quote:

On the basis that Galaxy meant nothing, and was incredibly successful, I think you're wrong. |

. Capital is just a word, which means London to those who live there, but means "big", or "massive" or possibly nothing at all to anyone else..

http://www.irnawards.co.uk/IRN-NewsA...h-FINAL-V2.pdf I think there's a good news team in the East Midlands, Capital's format limits what they can do. |

The closing date for the IRN Awards was 9th December so they would have been judged on pre-Capital material.

No. Capital's supposed to be CHR, but it's running a Top 40 format.

informal , dated excellent: Using "Capital" to mean "excellent" is only mentioned as a dated term (have you ever heard anyone under the age of about seventy describe something good as "capital"??) . And nowhere does it mean "big" or "massive".
