Are we seriously still arguing about the name Capital?
We had all this out four or five months ago.

I think Leicestershire got the very raw end of the deal TBH.

To be honest, listening to Capital Scotland is no different to listening to Galaxy Scotland ... nothing has really changed. The hatchet work took place in the 6-12 months leading up to the name change, where Galaxy introduced songs that just didn't fit in
To be honest, i liked the original Galaxy, but that stations in itself was a let down from Beat 106, and the station has become so non-local now that i just tend to listen to Kiss on DAB ... which beats Capital hands down! |

...and Derbyshire too James - cities like Leicester and Derby should really have a station of their own - far smaller cities still support a decent local station - we are just unlucky to have the awful Global monster holding our local licences.
It's had an effect, everywhere I go now they seem to have Gem 106 on! |

Long may that continue, Gem 106 is a fantastic station, so much better than Heart.
Technically Steffan LaTouche is a Leicester Sound presenter. |

Millions would disagree with that
And I'm supposedly in it's target audience. Quote:

I don't live in the Midlands anymore but in the 2.5 months I did listen the novelty of it was nice, but it's sounded tired very quickly. |

I just didn't personally like Heart. I think it sounded very fake, the presenter patronising you into thinking its More Music Variety and these are the only songs that Abba ever did etc.
I find GEM 106 much more geniune and the presenters sound like they are talking just to you. |

Capital Manchester isn't a regional north west station though is it? I though it was a local Manchester station?

The point i was trying to make is they never mention the areas, eg Levenshulme, Burnage, Eccles, etc, even Salford is a stand alone city...... Trying to make out its still got a local relevence by dropping a split link with the word "Manchester" in, every 30 minutes doesn't sit well with me, both on a personal and professional basis. |

Been listening to Capital Manchester on DAB today, as I can't receive it on FM (due to the fact I live in Liverpool, not Manchester) and it's a good mix of current pop. Shame there isn't a Capital Liverpool.
I do have one question though - why 'Capital'? I always thought the 'Capital' brand meant the capital of the UK, as in London, where the original 95.8 Capital station came from? Isn't it redundant to call a station "Capital Manchester" or "Capital Cardiff" - unless they mean it in the old sense? Surely it would have made sense to choose a less "London-centric" brand name. But anyway, as long as the music is good, I'm listening. (When I'm in Manchester) |

According to Ashley Tabor, during press interviews about the rebrand of the Galaxy and Hit music networks, they considered using the 'Galaxy' brand but thought that there was too much value in the Capital brand in London to risk changing it. There was discontent at the rebrand of Galaxy, but I think Global feared a huge backlash if Capital was changed. 95.8 is far too valuable a licence in their eyes to mess too much with.
Whether that was right or not remains to be seen, but that was their thinking I believe. |

the advertising agencies weren't keen to purchase advertising on Galaxy.
- Local stations do better if they sell direct to local clients. You don't sell local radio through London agencies. Were Capital trying to apply their London-centric sales model to Galaxy's provincial stations? |

Heart was making a shedload because Global were able to sell the whole brand to the agencies in London, as was Capital in London, but the agencies didn't want to buy Galaxy, so the Galaxy network was under performing with national clients. |

Yep, that's right - I was aware of the problems they had selling the 'Galaxy' brand to advertisers, but I do remember Ashley Tabor giving this second reason also.
It's a shame London can't have its own station anymore. The rhythmic formats of the other Galaxy licences bring the 95.8FM output down in standard I think and dilutes it. Hit music is never going to stay r'n'b/hip hop forever, and if it does change, Capital are sunk as they can't play it and will have to rely on Ofcom letting them weasel out of their format. |
