I wonder if Rick "Andy" Parfitt (or whoever it was) saying that was just a bit of BBC bullshit to make a point about how distinctive Radio 1 is from commercial stations, to justify its public funding. Very much like what Bob Shennan said about Radio 2 this week.

It never would have occurred to me but, yes, Dave would be an excellent fit for Radio 1 and would probably shine with longer links.

As one says: "if it's not Radio 4 or 6Music, Guardian readers hate it". Which about sums it up.

Don't get me wrong, I can see how an intelligent and educated reviewer comes up with that conclusion (minus the fact that Johnny and Lisa have only avoided national stardom because of a "clever move" by Capital - more like 'cos Ofcom won't let them).

But Capital aren't making their network for Guardian reviewers. Or readers, probably.

Of course, I agree with everything other than the the bit about it "being the cool alternative to the BBC". It was always safe music-wise, though nothing like as sterile as it is now.

Are they no longer making local-specific links for the stations outside London? They seem pretty generic these days. How does Dave Kelly do phone calls, etc. if it is voice-tracked or pre-recorded links?

It's simple. Download the 153 tracks on their current playlist to your ipod and you have your very own personalised Capital FM, put this on shuffle and away you go.

If you want to be even geekier then add your own bland voice tracking in between the mp3s and boooom you have one hell of a product. It will go down well with the chavs.

On a serious note, Capital FM can be tolerated in very small doses, otherwise it becomes too repetitive for my liking.

The depressing thing is the likelihood of a significant improvement in the RAJAR results.

I would find that depressing not because of what Capital is (and what Galaxy has become) but how it reflects on the tastes and the listening habits of British Joe Public.

In the same way that Heart does, just a different demographic.

"Average listeners" do not write comments on Digital Spy's radio forums or on the Guardian's Media website.

as much as i an a global basher, they have realised the average joe public is nowhere near as enthusiastic about music as his counterpart a decade or so ago........


could it be more entertainment choice these days, eg computer games, or the fact that the only time that they treat music seriously is when they watch x- factor??..........its all so very sad.

Quick question, Is it just me or when Capital FM announced the Networking of Capital FM they seemed to drop Capital FM down a couple of pegs so it didn't sound so young, bouncy and energetic?

It might just be me or has anyone else noticed.

But joe public yoof do use facebook and did express their opinions there, and occasionally even now still do.

I think perhaps Will Cozens will move into the 11pm-3am slot once Dave is gone? He definitely deserves better than the 3am-6am slot....

I was listening into Capital FM Manchester, and I'm wondering how they do the links when they say "You're listening to Capital FM Manchester" when a national DJ is on? Do they have different links for the different stations pre-recorded?

Yes. The regional links are voicetracked, while the London version is always live.
