I think it's likely that Ofcom will simplify the formats in the near future (they have already hinted as much) and Capital's format will be a music-led station for people aged 15-34. This would solve their Galaxy format problem and hopefully would broaden the music genres played on the station.

So OFCOM cave in again...Case of if we ignore our format obligation and then you'll change it for us...

But they can split output and already do for much of the day, so if they wanted to play more guitar bands on Capital London they easily could. Capital was hardly a big supporter of those kinds of bands before it merged with the Galaxy network anyway.

The reason they don't play that kind of music is that, for the most part, it isn't popular with Capital's target audience of 15-24 females. Radio 1 plays a lot of that stuff and, surprise surprise, it has slight a male skew in contrast to Capital's significant female bias. Meanwhile, Capital has a higher (percentage) reach with 15-24 females (48% vs 46%) and a larger proportion of its reach/hours comes from that demo. I can't imagine they'll be emulating Radio 1 by playing more indie any time soon when all the evidence shows that Capital's music mix is more successful at reaching its target audience.

Simple, advertisers want females, they make the household purchasing decisions apparently. Get advertisers = get money.

You don't alienate blokes by having a female-skewed playlist.

Men will listen to a female-biased playlist. Heart, for example, has almost6 as many male listeners as females.

Women, on the other hand, won't put up with a male-skewed playlist. (Virgin 1215, for example, had a tiny female audience).

Is that because the big birds all listen to Heart?

Will we ever hear a "95.8" jingle on Capital London again? They seem to have all been brushed under the carpet ever since the national roll out. I don't see what's stopping them using them still in London only, seeing as they are producing a separate version of the output for London anyway.
