No. It would be good if Capital was doing updates on the riots seeing as Capital is one of London's heritage stations.

Although London has got LBC which did a great job of covering things.

Capital Birmingham are doing a good job inserting local news into Rich Clarke's show though!

Capital London doesn't take "networking" output as it has its own live output.

The Chinese system of gagging the media in these situations does have its merits (as does just shooting everybody).

Would the UK be having these riots if the media wasn't reporting them?

I was just thinking - at what point would it be sensible to:

i) Impose a nightime curfew, say 7pm to 7am
ii) Embargo on all reporting on the violence for 12-24 hours; all other news reporting carries on as normal
iii) Deploy the army to the affected areas

I suspect any or all of these would have at least some support. The difference here, of course, is that it would simply be a mean of maintaining law & order, and protecting life and property, rather than a means to state opression.

A gagging order on broadcasters would, in my opinion, only make things worse. Do you really think that the idiots behind the violence in recent days will think twince about going out looting because there are no TV cameras or radio mics there?

Back on topic, there's no need for Capital London to break off from any normal programming because of this. As for local stations, Capital East Midlands reported trouble in Nottingham last night and I'm guessing Birmingham/North West did the same.

Capital Manchester had Ant Payne on until midnight on Tuesday night covering the riots and doing an excellent job too if I may say, especially as he'd been awake since half 4 that morning doing the breakfast show!


No it wouldn't but it might prevent copycat incidents like we've seen across the Uk this week. If the other cities hadn't been made aware of the trouble in London it wouldn't have spread, simple as.

Come off it. Even if there had been a news blackout, the news would still have spread (as it indeed did) via Twitter, Facebook, BBM etc etc.

As we saw during the Arab Spring, attempts to control the state run media proved fruitless and the protests spread because of social networking - and you can't feasibly stop that without turning into China.

A few decades ago maybe but word of mouth is so much more than just people telephoning and talking to eachother, our avenues of conversation are so great now that I don't think without shutting down social networking, you will ever control the flow of news and events.

Also, why do they always come as a package? I'm surprised at Global taking them on, having to pay two wages instead of one for a show!

I can see where you're trying to come from here - a very long CV of stations for a radio presenter doesn't necessarily look good - but I guess it's horses for courses.

That said, JK and Joel are known as a double act - why would they - and Global - not play on that strength? Perhaps, given their recent form, they're not on top dollar either.

Yes. They get their information from social media, their mates texting, you tube, forums etc. They are not sitting at home watching sky news.

Look at it this way without the media would local people have known to go out and defent property or even cleanup the street because of the riots. Also think about the video images from the media that will identify looters and have them brought to justice.

Of course we could just go round council estates and any household with no father gets their kids executed or placed in labour camps. I'm sure the chinese would be in favour of that too.

Is it really that long a CV?? Even if it is its still an impressive CV. Viking FM - award winning, Key 103 - Award winning, Radio 1 - were there quite a while and would certainly have had a lot of suport and learned a few new things there. Radio Aire is a bit of a blip but in my view they are still talented broadcasters and far better than your average jock.
