I must beg to differ. Specialist output is an essential, part of Capital's output, for the simple reason that it now incorporates the entirety of the former Galaxy network.
The Galaxy network was set up specifically to deliver a specialist service, and in the case of the Yorkshire, Scotland and North-East regionals, were given far greater scale than their contemporary pop rivals so as to make them more viable with the niche output.
Sadly, Global have now turned these stations into exactly what they were supposed to be an alternative to: mainstream Top 40 pop, as opposed to just outside the mainstream with strong appeal to the under 40s, and going much more specialist during evenings ans weekends.
Galaxy was a runaway ratings success, despite the amount of specialist output it produced, and the same still applies to Kiss.
It is most unfortunate that the daytime on-air sound of Capital does not reflect the fact that it is now broadcasting on frequencies licensed to specialist dance stations.
Global have already got away with a great deal of watering down; they should not be permitted to have their own way any further.
It is unfortunate that there is no stipulation that a certain proportion of the specialist output should be broadcast before midnight, because now there is a (probably deliberate) catch 22 situation where the specialist shows don't attract the audiences they would if they were available at more accessible times.
Andi Durrant, Mash and James Barr's specialist shows absolutely have to remain to stay on-brand and within character for the Galaxy stations.
If Global don't want to do this with all of their stations then they should split the network at certain times.
