Hopefully James keeps the Saturday night show or else gets Fridays back. For me, he is the best presenter and him and Pandora capture the "going out" atmosphere and vibe perfectly. Will is good but James does Saturdays brilliantly IMO so I'd like him to stay there.

The London output is a shadow of its past these days. I guess the network is a financial success but it hasn't exactly added many listeners. As I go around the East Mids you don't hear it very much and no-one talks about it. Its like a Now album on constant rotate...
Yeah, I'm in Birmingham at university, and I've never heard anybody talk about Capital FM, not even once. I'm 20 as well, so right in Capital's supposed target audience. But I think the station targets a different audience than what it claims to.

The problem is, no male (and probably a large amount of females) my age would ever want to be caught listening to a song like Starships or Domino. Thankfully all the clubs in Birmingham realize this, so they never play those songs, but it seems certain radio stations don't know this (although realistically, I think Capital DO know this, but they play those songs anyway, since they appeal to the 30+ crowd, which gets them more audience).

Radio 1 have a similar problem, they play too many songs which their target audience just wouldn't want to listen to.

Capital FM is a station that parents put on in the car while taking their kids to school. Meanwhile, the kids just take out their ipods and listen to their favourite songs by Drake or Skrillex.

I've heard Choice FM (which is also a Global station I believe) mentioned in a few conversations. I think because a lot of the people at my uni are from London.

But overall, I think radio in general is becoming more and more irrelevent to my generation, so in a sense, maybe it would be a lost cause for Capital to actually target its supposed target audience anyway? If it was successful in targetting the right age group, its audience would certainly plummet I imagine.

I don't even have one personally, so I have to listen to the radio, when I'm in the car with my parents. I'm not allowed to choose the radio station (not that there's much I'd like anyway tbh). They usually put on Heart FM. Sometimes they put on Capital as well. Back when I was younger my parents used to absolutely despise Galaxy FM, but I think after it became Capital and it's gone all dance-pop/adult contemporary they like it a lot more now.

Interesting theory, but... wrong. Capital's audience is highest amongst 15-24 year olds:

Actually Andy Roberts from KISS posted this on his twitter a few weeks ago:

#RadioFact . Nearly 50% of listening time to Capital is done by over 45 year olds - Nearly No1 Hit Music Station For OLD People it seems.

There were reasons why Ofcom originally awarded both Kiss and Galaxy their regional licenses. One of them was that so they could offer something to the youth culture, say if you weren't a fan of the daytime tunes on Radio 1 (or any of the commercial stations that have a target audience of over 30) You could tune into ether Galaxy or Kiss and discover something astonishing which may inspire you to become a club DJ an eventually create your own songs. For me (now 20) I didn't know about House or Trance music until I switched on Galaxy FM after drivetime on one Friday evening. Now since the whole 'Capital' takeover has happened, and that Kiss is a shadow of it's former self. Where will specialist music stand on the commercial market in the next few years? Would we see the return of Galaxy if Global had to sell up a few of the stations (caused by the GMG merge?)

I'm surprised it's that high, but there's really no way the average listener of the station could be any lower than 30, going by the songs they play.

I remember on Galaxy, even as recently as 2009, a lot of songs I would hear just once or twice, and that was it. But now on Capital, it seems you'll either never hear a song at all, or you'll hear it hundreds of times.

And some of the songs I used to hear on Galaxy, I know would be totally ignored by the station if they were released/were hits today.

I thought Roberto had unfortunately returned to Capital just then - but it's the rather posh Christian Williams.

Interesting, Will cozens finished his end of show speech & then talked about Andi's show up next. No commercial breaks just went straight into the show,

I don't think they were late, He started at 23:55.

Will Cozens and Ant Payne pick up an extra hour each on overnights with Emily Segal gone.

Max Akhtar replaces Adam O'Neill on Sunday evening who switches to Saturday breakfast. Ouch.

How come James Barr is down to just 7-10pm Mon-Thursday now? (Massive drop from 7-11pm Mon-Sat this time last year)

I avoid Capital like the plague these days.

Since getting DAB in my car I've been locked to Kiss.

I'm 22.

Infact, Capital is unbearable to listen to anymore. The FM output is still scratchy and tinny, and on DAB in hampshire the bit rate is so low its like listening to a pirate MP3 a friend has on their iPod.

Shame Adam is now only on for 2 hours on the network Saturday mornings from 6-8am. I hope he does some cover for the network as well as he is one of my favourites on Capital.

Right, I can only give my own take on this, so bear with me.

I think most guys, probably some women as well but mainly guys, go through a "credible music" phase through college/uni and into the first few years of work. That was certainly the case with me, though the fact it coincided with indie in the UK being at a peak probably helped. Thus, would I have been a fan of the equivalent of Starship or Domino when I was younger? I'd like to believe I would be, because they're cracking songs, but maybe not.

When I was back in that era, 16-21, I was Radio 1/XFM all the way. When Radio 1 got rid of Mark & Lard from breakfast I thought it disgraceful and a betrayal, whereas now I would completely understand they were wrong for the slot and I was being an idiot. (though I still wouldn't be listening to Zoe Ball).

I slowly was won over again by pop music though, to the point that I'm a far bigger fan of new mainstream music than I was when I was a teenager. Funny how that works.

Anyway, I suspect my point out of this ramble is that by playing pure pop you're not always going to get the youngest audience. And I suspect Capital don't mind this. Under 25s aren't much use to advertisers because (as the stereotype goes) they haven't got any money yet. I suspect they'd be happy if the majority of the audience were over 25 - in steady work, possibly with kids who are a drain on finances, and possibly ready to graduate to Heart. The under 25s are served perfectly well by Radio 1, who can cater to all their whims.

Totally agree. Since I got my DAB, it's Kiss all the way, although I always need to change versions on my journey to work because it looses signal. I hate it, there's a few good songs on Capital, then suddenly "Beauty and The Beat" comes on, it's embarrassing if you have other people in the car.

The only thing I listen to Capital for is for Travel Updates.
