Is it just that our best talent doesn't bother auditioning for the X factor, or that USA has a much larger population, but it seems to me that even most of the Hollywood rejects on AI are better than the X factor winners.

I personally think X-Factor is too "personality" driven, gimmicky and over-produced.

X-Factor is almost afraid to rely on the musical ability of contestants and relies heavily on creating "stories".

Even allowing from X-Factor gimmickry the quality of American contestants seem to me as well, far above what we get here.

The X Factor is about the judges, the contestant's are just a sideshow.

No. As someone who has been to two full days of auditions(accompanying my wife) I can tell you it's NOT that. X Factor is 95% a TV show, 5% a talent show, if even that. Idol it's more like 50/50. After the joke that was X Factor 2010, I won't be watching it again but am loving Idol

Being from the UK, I have to agree; in fact... I said the exact same thing earlier.

The difference in the standard of the contestants is quite staggering..............most of the last 50 can really sing well. Quite what they would make of Jedward, 1Direction, Wagner, and many more X-factor finalists, I do not know!

Watching it now and it is SOOOOOOOO much better than X Factor. I absolutely LOVE the judges ( wouldnt it be great if we could get Steven?) And the standard is STAGGERING. Should be on itv1. It would be MASSIVE. It also proves that the old style of auditioning in the room is so much better.

I think the American public get to hear a far wider range of music on their tellys and radios than we in the UK do.
Therefore the auditionees are influenced by a vast variety of music, and that is more entertaining for us because they don't all come on and sing the same song in the same style.

And I do think this AI is better without Simon.
His lack of musical knowledge astounded me.
All he seems to be interested in is singers who are in the style of Leona.

Having Steven and Jennifer as judges was a genius decision in my opinion.
I can't take my eyes off them. They are both fascinating.

And having Steven, the Demon of Screamin' on the show will obviously encourage more singers of the rock style to audition.

And let's face it, Hollywood knows how to put on a great show.

I'm loving this season.

The US has a totally different work ethic. Everyone really does believe if you work hard you can be a success. And it's not cool to be amateur like it is here.

Moreover the US created Hollywood - it created what it means to be a star. Generally the population understands better what is required to "make it". You have to look gorgeous, sing amazingly, be totally professional. Not turn up dishevelled, with a sense of entitlement.

I totally agree - it's brilliant this season. Simon's complete lack of musicality was gob-smacking. People with no musical training themselves don't seem to have noticed how bad his judgement was.

Having just watch Hollywood round 3 I have to agree with the OP. Some inredible talent on display. The show itself is fantastic sans Cowell.

How right you are! I like Steve Tyler and Jennifer Lopez on this show, both have surprised me, and both know alot more about music and singing than Cowell.

A larger population is one factor, but I reckon a lot of UK talent doesn't want to tarnish their careers. Although the UK have some good singers/performers

I think in XF for instance, Simon wanted a certain type of singer, and let the others go cos they didn't fit his mould.

AI is totally different which is a good thing.

Agree with all of the above, but think Steven is useless at telling contestants if they are in or out

I so agree with this thread. The talent in the top 24 is far far superior to what we have in the X-factor....

Well, come on...

The math is pretty obvious.

Totally agree, when XF went to crowd auditions, I can't remember anyone saying it was a bad move (as in, from critics and TV presenters etc, not DS posters). But I hate the live audience and it just makes the whole thing even more contrived.

Pound for pound, or person for person, America has more talent in my opinion. With that said, X Factor and Idol aren't really comparable because of the difference in the way the processes work. American Idol are looking for people with talent who'll work well on TV. X Factor are looking for people who'll work well on TV with a little bit of talent a bonus.

I have watched American Idol from the very beginnning. The only season that I got bored with was last year and eventually switched off before the end. I wasn't going to bother this year but then a friend in America said she was very impressed and she NEVER watches AI. So I switched on last week and was stunned at the amazing talent on display. I normally have one favourite or at the most two but there are so many contestants this year who stand out.

AI beats X factor hands down. As someone said earlier, X factor is about the judges not the contestants.

And...thank god Simon Cowell has gone. I just love Randy, Jennifer and Steven. I think they work so well together, they know their stuff. Really looking forward to the top 24 this week. Trying not to look at the spoilers.

Put simply, the X Factor is a comedy show when compared to American Idol. I feel embarrassed to now that some Americans may be watching X Factor and pissing themselves laughing...

The music scene is more diverse in America. I can't imagine anyone like Crystal Bowersox auditioning for X-Factor.

I much prefer AI, most of the performers would knock the socks of anything we do in Britain.

After watching the final 13 perform last night on ITV 2 i must say that they were, by and large, pretty rubbish....only imo of course.

I think AI really does need someone like Simon Cowell to give some of the finalists a reality check instead of the overstated 'critiques' being handed out by Steve Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

For me James Durbin and Pia Toscano are two of the best and i hope they go far in the competition.

As for Jacob Lusk and Paul MacDonald....well i thought they were terrible, but i guess its all subjective, maybe they are better suited to the American audience and after all it is American Idol !

For me X-F is the better talent show and Matt Cardle is a better vocalist than any of the current AI crop.
