Matt Cardle can sing in tune and hit some high notes, but I find him pretty dull and see right through his 'I'm just a nice Southern boy that used to be a painter and decorator' act. During the X Factor, he seemed to lack the ability to put his own stamp on any of his performances in terms of the melodies. But of course, it looked to most like he was 'doing something different' by constantly singing songs sung by females

I honestly doubt he would have made the top 24 of Idol this year. And if you think The X Factor is a better talent show, then I really don't know what to say

I can't see how anyone could find XF superior to AI. I LOVE this year's Idol..there is a great mix of singers, with lots of different styles and image and strengths. I love that americans aren't afraid to shine in what THEY feel they are good at - like Scott with his love of country. Sometimes I think having the judges mentor the singers on XF takes away from their own innate natural ability. If there was a contestant like Scott on XF he would be given a Whitney song to sing instead of allowing him to flourish doing what he loves.

I think AI really does need someone like Simon Cowell to give some of the finalists a reality check instead of the overstated 'critiques' being handed out by Steve Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

For me James Durbin and Pia Toscano are two of the best and i hope they go far in the competition.

As for Jacob Lusk and Paul MacDonald....well i thought they were terrible, but i guess its all subjective, maybe they are better suited to the American audience and after all it is American Idol !

I do and don't agree.

I think this year's top 13 bring a whole new meaning to the word overrated and the diversity that many mention isn't there. With the exception of Naima for the girls and Scotty and Paul for the boys, the rest are much of a muchness or simply bad impersonators of previous contestants. All but three of the top 13 are rejects from previous years (some more than once) so that tells you something in itself.

While I agree with Spider Rico that Matt played too much on the "painter and decorator" schtick and took full advantage of more often than not performing songs by female singers, I think he's a good singer and I'm tired of the "He wouldn't get into the top 24 on American Idol" line. The top 24 on American Idol has more than its share of dross every year and sometimes even the top 10 and 12 has. On a few occasions, a member of that pack of dross has actually won.

That said, much as I like Matt, even at his best he isn't to the level, vocally or performance-wise, of the best American Idol contestants over the years.
