My partner is due an upgrade soon. Vodafone have a very competitive deal which is £5 a month cheaper. Anyone had recent dealings with o2 re upgrades will they offer a deal or just tell us to go to Vodafone?

I'd been on O2 for YEARS and when my contract was coming to an end last september I was told to just 'go to vodafone'. I spoke to a few different people on different days. They happily cancelled my contract and said if Vodafone are offering a cheaper deal then you gota go where the best deal is. !!!!!! Honestly.

They messed up my cancellation and for some reason put me on another contract, and then tried to charge me £25!!! It wasn't till I was cancelling that unwanted and unagreed contract some guy offered me a cheaper deal. I said no thanks, I've already been told a number of times to go to vodafone, so I have. He cancelled my contract but I was still getting bills through for this £25! In the end, it took 56 minutes on the phone to get them to wipe that bill. It was a nightmare.

O2 don't care about contract customers. Fact. Sure, they've finally started offering upgrading customers the same deals as new customers, but they're still much, much worse than the competition. If you can get signal with Vodafone in all the places you need it and you're happy with the deal they're offering, I'd say jump ship sharpish.

O2 used to offer decent upgrades but was how surprised how little they seem bothered about keeping my custom when my contract expired last year with them, despite me having been with them for around ten years. I went across to Vodafone and they made no effort to try and keep me, whereas in the past they had offered me some decent upgrade deals.

Other people have reported similar. If this some sort of shift in 02 policy?

I remember my last upgrade with O2, i had to fight for a £4 discount where as the year before i got a £15 discount. O2 just doesnt seem to care about there customers anymore, depending on what is around once my contract ends in May/June i'll look elsewhere.

I wonder if it's because they seem to be struggling to support the number of customers they have. All I hear about from friends in the South East and London is poor signal, and data dropouts.

Thanks for the replies. Vodafone is OK around here. Was in the o2 shop at the weekend overheard the salesperson telling a customer they give better upgrades over the phone than what he could do!

UK market is pretty much saturated.. every one has a phone or two. Giving discounts at upgrade time means lower revenue so they prefer to see if you wanna walk. You'll probably bump into a person or two walking in as you walk out...

Surely this is the same for any network? The sales people have a set budget they can tweak, and if you speak to sales over the phone they similarly have a fixed budget, but going through to retentions/cancellation they have a bigger budget.

I'm on O2 and now my contract is up this month I am looking at my options. My £15pm plus £5 true unlimited data has been fine, but I suspect the next phone I want won't be on anything less than £35 for a while

This is very true, no company is going to offer heavy discounts when there are more people walking in the door wanting to pay full price. Its especially true for low paying customers, if you are spending £100 a month you'll eventually get a deal. If you are spending £30 a month and want a discount they'll call your bluff. So the moral is go to the best deal for you, take everything into account.

I've been with o2 since they were cellnet and until the iPhone came along they always give great upgrade deals. Now tho there very poor and upon completion of this contract I will be jumping ship. Had several complaints this last 12 month and none have been resolved, every time i basically get told tough and nothing changes. Very poor.
