BB Torch Or BB Bold 9780
Im looking to get one of the above mentioned mobiles, looking at the BB website at the comparisons between the two they appear to be very similar apart from the touch screen on the Torch.
I just wondered if anyone has either of the mobiles and could give me some feedback to help me decide which to go for

In terms of hardware it's pretty much a wash - however a big point is that the Torch has 4GB internal storage and a 4GB card included, whereas the Bold 9780 only has 256 MB internal with a 2GB card included, so if you're looking to put music or a lot of files/apps on there I'd lean towards the Torch.
Apart from that it comes down to your personal preference. The keyboard on the Bold is probably easier to use, but that's not to say the one on the Torch is bad. You get a lot more screen real-estate on the Torch, which makes reading emails, surfing the web and such much easier. Each has strengths, think about whether you're going to be doing more typing or looking stuff and let that guide you. |

Well, I guess it all depends upon what you prefer.
I have the Blackberry Bold 9780. I adore this phone - the keyboard, whilst quite small (like all BB's though) is very easy to use and for me, one very important factor above anything else was that whatever phone I had to get - it had to have a decent battery life. Now, whilst it's true to say I am not on the phone every 5 minutes, I do use it alot for texting, the odd camera shot (which, by the way is very good on this phone - it's 5mp but the results are very good) and the odd call each day and so far (having owned it for just 2 weeks) I've only had to charge it once per week! It has a brilliant battery. Personally I doubt the torch (being a touchscreen therefore consuming more power) would last that long, but, of course, it also comes down to how much you use the phone. Personally, I hate touchscreens (just don't get on with them plus the battery life tends to be much poorer) - I much prefer a physical keyboard.... As I say, depends upon your own personal preferences and what is important to you within a handset..... but the Bold 9780 is a very good phone.... in my opinion..... |

I'd reccomend them both, I have the Torch and it's by far the best phone I've ever had.
OP do you like touch screens? |

Thank's guys for all your feedback,
KieranDS - I have never had a touch screen before, alot of my colleagues who have had Blackberry's in the past have now switched to the HTC Desire and while they really love the phone itself, they do say that the touch screen can be quite frustrating at times esp when texting and thats the advantage of the Torch having both the touch screen and slide-out qwerty options. Paul M C - I totally agree that the battery life is also a major factor and that the touch screen Torch may use up alot more battery than the Bold. In terms of the hardware on the phones that isn't really an issue as the main use will be for emails, texting and surfing the web. |

I use the keyboard to type and just use the touch screen to launch applications, however, the on screen keyboard is good and I have big fingers.
In terms of battery life on the Torch, its very good. Mine can last up to 2 days with heavy internet usage and texting. |

I am going to go against popular opinion here and say get the 9780, I had the 9700 before it and moved to the Torch. I hate sliders but thought the Torch would be different however this isn't the case, the phone (the Torch) often feels flimsy in terms of the slider as the majority of models always feel slack or loose in some way. Also the only different between the Torch and 9780 is the Slider and Touch screen and honestly speaking the extra markup you might have to pay in which to get the former isn't worth it. I have never ever been unhappy with a Blackberry, however after having the Torch since release date I do yearn for the traditional style keyboard based Blackberry such as the Bold. The batter life is also a lot better on the Bold, although admittedly the Torch's has improved with recent software releases. The point I am making is you need to decide what you want a Blackberry for, if you intend on a lot of mobile browsing and using media then the Torch is the natural choice due to the touchscreen. However if it is mainly to communicate (Email/Text/Facebook and so on) then the Bold 9780 is definitely the way to go. If given the choice and I was coming to upgrade again I would go for the 9780 in a heartbeat. |

Fingers crossed I made the right choice ![]() I spent absolutely ages deliberating what mobile to get. I was replacing an "old school" Nokia 6303 classic. I knew I didn't want a touchscreen smartphone - I don't like touchscreens and also was not prepared to have to charge the phone every day or every other day. No way! So, I began looking at the Blackberry range. My wife has the Blackberry Curve and that seemed a decent enough phone - but I was really after a phone that took decent enough photo's (had a 3.2mp camera on my old Nokia so wanted to upgrade this a little) - I also wanted a fairly decent music player with a 3.5mm headphone jack (essential for me!) as well as a "biggie" here - and that is good battery life. I am pleased to say, for me, the Bold 9780 was a fantastic choice. It is very easy to use (once I had learnt it's features which took a couple of days coming from an old style Nokia!) but once you know where things are and how things work, it's easy. The camera is very good. It's a 5 mp camera - so - not the best obviously on a mobile - but there again - no where near the worst - the pictures are sharp and the auto focus is excellent - it is outstanding for close up shots. The music player is perfectly adequate for my needs. Sounds fine through my own headphones and I can't see any issues with it. Yes - I know there are much better phones for music (and cameras) out there, but, as I said previously, depends what you want out of a phone - and this met all my requirements. Finally, battery life is superb. I use the phone for quite a few texts each day (about 5 mins worth of calls), the odd camera shot/music as well as a small amount of wi-fi web browsing and I only have to charge it once per week. To sum up - I don't think you'll be disappointed. |

Thanks for that Paul M C!
It gets delivered on Friday, so if I have any problems getting used to it I know who to contact for help (only joking). Ive got the Blackberry Pearl at the moment so hopefully its not going to take too long to get to grips with it. |

If you've already got the BB Peal than you should be more than familiar with the phones features, so you'll have a headstart from someone like me who had to start from scratch! Let us know how you get on with it when it's delivered! |

Well Paul MC I would love to give you an update on the bold, however o2 have done what they do best and totally messed up my order.
The mobile was supposed to be delivered yesterday between 7.30am and 9pm ( what ridiculos timescales) having made my poor mother get out of bed at the crack of dawn to house sit all day for me while I went to work the phone never arrived! ![]() After calling o2 and being passed from pillar to post I get informed that the mobile is out of stock (even thou the website states the mobile is 'in stock'. ![]() When will it be delivered I ask? Sorry we dont know as we dont have that information, on asking why noone had the common courtesy to tell me that it wasn't go to be delivered I am again told sorry we dont have that information. Just as my blood has reached boiling point I check my emails and they have very kindly sent me a bill for the phone i havent received! I need to go and lie down in a darkened room ! So as for when I will get the phone !! who knows I have been told to ring them daily for an update . Well you know what they can do with that piece of information

Better late than never I suppose! It better be worth the wait...lol BTW, the only "negative" thing which happens on my handset, and - many many others - is a slight problem or glitch with the camera. It will take photo's for a while, fine - but sometimes, it freezes up and won't let you take any more pictures - the middle camera button is "hopped past" when you use the trackpad. Doing some research on this indicates that it is a common problem and even some You Tube videos have been made on this. Someone has worked out that if you put the camera on "face detection" mode, it will work, so this is a workaround. Just thought I would mention this, as I considered at one point, taking my phone back (although I really didn't want to go all through the hassle) until I saw that this is a very common problem with this hanset. Other than that, it's still a brilliant little phone - really like it and wouldn't swap it for anything else on the market right now... Let us know how you get on with yours! |

I think also owning a Blackberry before made it even easier for me to get to grips with it. Thanks for the heads up about the camera I haven't actually taken many pictures yet so at least I know what to do if it does start playing up. Thanks once again for all your advise and I too would recommend this phone to anyone thinking of purchasing a Blackberry. |
