Most DVD players will play mp3's from CD's but I want to be able to play mp3's from DVD's as thats what I back up my mp3's on, plus the extra storage capacity is nice.

I was thinking about buying a HD mp3 player in the style of a hifi component but they seem thin on the ground and are expensive so I thought I'd replace my Sony dvd player which is good but doesnt play mp3's, its about 2 1/2 years old.

any info is appreciated

I dont know about all DVD players but i know my new DVD player can. I was listening to a full collection of Now albums on DVD as MP3s. I think it can even play WMA files as well although i havent tested this feature yet.

The player i have is the AMW P8A5, its not just a DVD player its actually a full home entertainment set up with 5.1 speakers and sub, FM tuner and even inputs to connect other equipment.

DVD playback is very good and it can also play movies from recordable DVD without any problems unlike my old Toshiba. MP3 playback is top notch actually sounded better than on my PC with 7.1 speakers!

Ebuyer www.ebuyer.com currently have it for £50 (ex vat and delivery) this is an amazing bargain a few other online retailers are selling this exact same player for £150!

...if you have one of these DVD players that will play DivX/MPEG4 , then in all liklihood, it will, but it's still rare on most DVD players. I tried it, and it doesn't work on any of my DVD players, though as my PC is hooked up to my hi-fi, it's not a major blow.

I read on another forum that the reason why is because when a DVD player initially scans a disc, when it recognises it's a DVD, it then looks for a video file, if it doesn't find it, it won't recognise the disc. I suppose given time, it will become as common as mp3 CD compatibility is now..

You can make DVD's of mp3's that will play, but it takes some doing as you are actually creating it as a video DVD You need to make a single DVD compliant image, then add your mp3's..Then you hit a couple more problems..all of your audio will need to be converted to another format and have the frequency increased from 44,100 to 48,000. Then, DVD has a maximum of only 99 titles, so although you could put a thousand or more tracks decent quality mp3 on a single disc, there would be no way of identifying more than 99, so you'd have to merge tracks.

There is a program out called Audio DVD creator that simplifies all of this. It's really designed for making CD quality DVD's where you could put 5 or 6 albums worth of material on a single disc, (That should just get you under the 99 title limit), but it does have the mp3 option as well...takes AGES to re-encode a full mp3 disc though!!
