I made some last night with batter. I soaked them in buttermilk overnight and then coated in spicy seasoning and flour, dipped in the batter and deep fried them.

They were great and i've just had some left overs as a snack.

They're the best i've made because previously they've come out soggy so I must have gotten the preperation and batter right on this occasion.

So for homemade or chippy/restaurant battered are best but from the frozen section in the supermarket I prefer the breaded.

I find that the breaded ones mess up the oil.

I don't like frozen ones at all, but I love home-made, they may have been soggy if your cooking oil wasn't hot enough.
Anyone heard of onion bloomers, now I EXTRA LOVE those, we used to have them in a local restaurant but they stopped doing them......shame

I had the oil at the same temp as usual.
I'll have to have another go to see where I went right.

Was it the marination?
Was it using a thick batter with yeast?
Was it because the oil was brand new? - only been used once before a coulple of days back. I'm sure that is a big factor but is it the main factor or a combination?

Beer battered and made fresh are the best. They are quite filling though, when made that way.

same here! I also love thick slices of onion on an oven tray drizzled with olive oil, and seasoned. It makes some lovely caramelised onion treat to have with homemade oven chips or wedges.

Mmm...sounds lovely! I also like to throw whole onions in with a roast of any kind and when I press with a fork all the layers just cascade out and that middle bit is the most juicy and sweet! Scrumptous.

Now I want some baked onions...lol. I may just have to use your idea and make some to go with my lasagne tonight.

I have only tried battered onion rings, which I think are really tasty.
