I'm sure I read they expect Blackberry to struggle. They are selling phones in a bit of a trend however specifications wise they are miles behind bit like the Iphone 3G in it's day. I don't understand why Blackberry has gone mainstream as feature wise like camera, screen it's miles behind Androids.

I hear people ditching Iphone for Blackberry which is funny it's actually a downgrade but no doubt Blackberry has it's perks like the popular messenger.

Sony Ericsson, LG, Nokia have been to quiet in the market last year and this year too. I have the Iphone would never go near a Blackberry would probbaly go for an Android but saying that I prefer Samsung's own OS in the Samsung Wave.

Blackberry is a trend they are not a market leader. Apple started out a trend but the Iphone 4 is a seriously good smart phone. I suspect many who bought the 3GS never went for the 4 as it was too good. Many preferred the curves of the old model. So I think now the Iphone is not a trend but many people see it as a serious smartphone.

Conclusion:

Blackberry = Trend in the market that will go.
Iphone = Started out a trend but now making decent smart phones that no other company can rival.
Android = Fills the void for all those who can't afford the Iphone or don't like Itunes.
Windows Phone = Will be a flop.
Nokia Symbian = Already a flop.

I'm not sure I agree. There is room for all of them to survive IMHO - but some of them may need to make some changes to adapt to the market. For example Apple might start targeting the more budget conscious end of the market if they bring out a smaller and cheaper iPhone model. Nokia using WP7 does have some potential if they do it right. Blackberry has very loyal following and have not stood still either. Android will always dominate as there are so many manufacturers using it and it's evolved and continues to. This ensures the other smartphone makers don't get complacent and keep improving their products.

In most areas of London it's been iPhones and Blackberries mostly with some Desires here and there.

As someone who's never owned a Blackberry, what's the BBM craze?

Its Blackberry Messenger, instant messaging for Blackberrys.
I don't know if you have facebook or twitter and see posts like 'Add my pin ABCDEF1', that what it is. For some reason it's really taken off with teenagers.

Interesting to see the stats show that Android platform outsells the others by a mile. Weird when you'd think that sheep that bang on about how good their £600 iphones are always try to shout the loudest. I applaud apple for one of their marketing. Sell a phone for three times it's value and idiots will buy it in their droves. 'It's overpriced, it must be good', they say as they hold it in a funny way so that they can make a phone call on it. I love the way they bring out something that some other company did years ago and try to sell it as something brand new. The latest one is 'facetime'.. lol.. wow video calling wrappped up in a typically wanky iphone jargon claptrap. I dont know what i hate more, the overpriced iphone or the smug adverts advertising the latest emperor's new clothes or the self satisfying smug users who try to justify it all at any oppertunity you give them.

Again though, you're not comparing like with like. Android is a platform available on many handsets of varying makes.

He is comparing OS's. Android is an OS, it outsells iOS, RIM etc. Only Symbian OS outsells Android.

Okay, fair enough. The thread was initially about the makes of phone dominating the market though.

If you're comparing OS's, iOS almost certainly outsells Android. If you're excluding tablets and PMPs, and just counting phones, then all the Android phones combined outsell the iPhone.

But only, as far we know, in America. In Europe, sales are different.

Blackberries still sell very well in the UK.

In this thread its just phones. You are correct Android does outsell iOS by quite a bit.

If you do want to add tablets to the mix, by this time next year it would be a safe bet to assume Android will be outselling iOS on those as well.

Not really. I definitely wouldn't put any money on it. All depends on how the actual products are. At the moment it's all speculation.

In the long term I imagine, much like with phones, Android will dominate the mass market, while Apple dominates the lucrative high end. But I think this time next year, Apple will probably still be out in front in terms of market share.

Actually if you have the netbook it'll do the things the DS Lite, MP3 player and voice recorder (actually most mp3 players do the voice recording as well) will do so you wouldn't need them and if it has 3G then you have Google maps so no need for the GPS either If anything the netbook will be better than the iphone as it will have more than 16Gb storage and surfing the web will be much more pleasent

Back on topic: I only know one person with an iphone and thats a 3GS and no one with a blackberry - I have a Nokia having moved back to it from an Android 2.2 phone, and everyone else I know is either Nokia or HTC/Samsung with Android and one with a HTC W7.

Netbooks are dying on their arses for a reason though.

Anecdotal evidence of everyone using this platform or that platform is a total waste of time really, because people tend to use the same system as their friends. iPhone users tend to know a lot of iPhone users. Android users tend to know a lot of Android users. It doesn't really tell you much.

I would put my money on it...Android tablets will be out very shortly. Android will dominate the market.

I do like the way apple consumers always fall back on the lucrative/high end market quote.

On the local council estate it appears that the iPhone is handset of choice (I do voluntary work there and all the youngsters seem to have them).

Pretty much all of my friends have gone the Android or Blackberry route, my lad and his friends tend to use Windows 7 phones/Blackberry/Android (apple are seen as 'so last year') although my son in law has an Apple until he can move on when his contract finishes shortly and is also going for Windows.

I'm using my lads old G1 Dream and it suits my needs perfectly until his windows 7 phone contract finishes and I'll have that one too

Android have all but won the race, its a platform that can fit any price of phone from the bottom end of the market up to the luxury end, its a winner.

You put your money on it, then. Let us know how you get on.

It's rather sad that you try to resort to personal insults just because you don't like a point somebody has made. But it's sweet you're so upset about it.

I had edited my post before you posted, to remove said comments.

I would say my money is fairly safe...and you know it The point you made was factually incorrect...it is worldwide sales not just American. Read the link to the gartner article posted in this thread.

Nope. It isn't. Heck there's isn't even one remotely decent Android tablet that anyone sane would consider buying yet.

But lets come back in year's time and see.

One thing I would happily bet on, though, is that Apple will still have the lion's share of the income in tablets, regardless of marketshare, just as with phones.
