I am looking for a new contract and bit unsure what to go for. I currently have a Blackberry with no data usage-only calls and texts and am paying £20

Ideally looking for 100+texts, 300 mins and some data for internet browsing.GPS would be a bonus.I dont really want to go over £20pm.

I have heard about HTC phones but dont know if they are any good or should I stay with a Blackberry?

Just wondered if anyone knows of any suitable deals out there.

Thanks

You've only given us your line plan requirements. What do you value/don't care about in your current blackberry, what are you looking for in a new phone?

I havnt been using the Blackberry to it's full potential as I didnt want the additional data package. I need a new phone anyway as it's been dropped a few times and I dont find it particualy user friendly. I fancy a touch screen which obviously my current phone isn't.

What are the things you use your phone for most, or want to use it for? The things that are most important to you will determine what you should consider.

I'm also looking for a new mobile phone. I've settled for an iphone but now i'm working out how much i want to pay. I generally want to use it for e-mail and internet and texting, I need a new phone anyway because it looks like my battery could permanently die any day now.

Calls, texts and basic internet is a must. I use gmail so a simple way to allow me to read my emails. When I check my emails on my Blackberry (via wifi) it's a pain having to go in via gmail.com and enter in my email and user name each time.

Get one running Android. A colleague just signed up to the HTC Desire HD for £27 per month in Tesco... forget the exact allowances but it includes unlimited web.

Have you tried typing on a touchscreen keyboard like the iPhone's? Some people like it, a lot of people find hardware qwerty keyboards still preferable. If email and texting with basic internet is your priority I would say either go for a smartphone with a hardware keyboard e.g. HTC 7 Pro or go for a blackberry. There's a new blackberry with a big screen.

Aha! You've been misusing your blackberry. Blackberries can be very powerful for email but you haven't been using the blackberry email service, you've been logging on via the web browser. This is NOT the way to do it.

At your price point there are two real options: Blackberry or HTC Wildfire on Android. I recommend for you personally, stick with the blackberry.

Get the blackberry internet and email add-on. Then you can set up your gmail properly to work with the blackberry service. The emails will come to your phone just like texts do i.e. automatically. Also, because it's blackberry they will be encrypted until they reach you so it's more secure than other platforms. You can set your phone to receive them as soon as GMail itself receives them or on a slower frequency of checking.

To both of you: any smartphone platform now provides easy access to setting up GMail on your phones whether it's iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7 or Blackberry.

I'd like a touch screen. Whilst i've gotten faster over the years at pressing the same key three times to get to the letter i want, it's getting a bit tedious now.

It also looks like my battery could die for good in the next couple of months so i'd need a new phone anyway.

Speak to your current provider, tell them you are thinking of leaving and ask if they can offer you a good deal.

I just got -

400 any network minutes
unlimited UK landline minutes
300 texts
1Gb data allowance
a FREE HTC Desire HD

all for £20 a month.

It's on 24 month contract, so I'll be paying them £480 - but the phone itself is £400+ on PAYG, so it's a bit of a bargain for me.

Thanks for the Gmail info. I assumed there was an easier way to get my emails that having to log in every time,

Phones like the Dell Venue Pro and HTC 7 Pro and various blackberries have a hardware qwerty keyboard. This means one button per letter. Not just a number keypad like on old phones so there's no pressing a button three times to get one letter.

If you want touchscreen then I can recommend some (iPhone and Windows Phone seem to have the best software keyboards; Android ones are a bit less good but can be made tolerable with swype).

Phones like the Dell Venue Pro give you both options - there's a hardware qwerty keyboard but there's also a large 4" touchscreen with software keyboard.

I only press the point because lots of people see the iPhone and touchscreen typing and go "oh, great!" but when they try to use it, find it fiddly and get fed up after a while.

What kind of battery life are you getting out of it? (Without disabling things like data connection and 3G connection).

Orange. I told my best mate about it and he just got a similar deal with a free Desire HD too.

I am contemplating getting a smartphone myself. Either a HTC Desire or Sony Ericcson X10 mini pro on contract at Carphone Warehouse. Thinking about going on three for the internet usage. I am already a payg Orange customer with a standard mobile. I mostly use my phone for text and net.

I recently got the iPhone 4 32GB on the three network. Its for two years, paying £35pm, 2000mins, 5000texts, 5000 three to three mins and all you can eat data, meanings its unlimited. free voicemail

when I mean unlimited, its unlimited, to test it out I used up 3GB in a week and three were fine with. But you are never gonna use that much, unless you watch alot of video content.

I like the iPhone 4, I was going to get the HTC Desire HD, but I went for this instead.

It lacks bluetooth to non Apple devices, which is a major bummer. The LED flash is not all that, I would have preferred a Xenon flash like the SE phones.

the BB Torch is nice ...I might get that when it goes cheaper

Jus a quick update- I stayed with T Mobile as I went into the shop and they had a LG P500, 300 mins and texts, unlimited internet and free 01/02 calls. All for £15.

Its a good phone and does everything I need it to.
