Who else likes it here?

I think its the most misunderstood of all genres, and it annoys me when week minded people say

"oh its just talking"
"its bling-bling-cash-hoes-guns-drugs and not alot else"
"its fake and generally rubbish"

DISCUSS

I want a good discussion going on, all people are welcome, weather you like or dislike hip hop.

Like all genres ,there is a lot of dross out there but the good stuff is excellent.I prefer mostly older stuff-Salt n Pepa Run DMC,NWA,Public Enemy et al.Eminem leaves me cold. The best newer stuff is a lot of the Gospel-flavoured stuff like Raze ,Sounds of Blackness and Kirk Franklin IMO.BBC 1 xtra plays lots of good RnB/Garage/Hip-hop stuff.

the thing about hiphop, when its good its very good but when its bad its horrific. all genres can be like that but not to the extremes of hiphop and unfortunately the latter tends to be the type that gets played a lot.

i suppose you could call me mr old skool, though i also like a lot of the early gangsta like the dogg pound, MC Eiht and so on.

i like Hip hop/Rnb. but i agree some of the of the tracks are complete dross, where as some is teriffic.

BBC 1xtra is a great station, when it started i thought it was the best station that i ever heard in terms of the music playlist! a year or more later, they started playing Dancehall/bashment which i hate! that really got on my tits.
now i flick to and fro radio 1 and 1xtra. radio1 plays the same dross day in day out! i only listen due to the decent DJ's

Gotta agree with that. Whats with the influx of dancehall artists? Seems to be "In" and its definately not cool.

I have to say that I'm not too keen on much of the newer stuff, although I do have a few Eminem/D12 cds in my collection. I prefer the older artists - Ice T, Run DMC, Ice Cube et al.....

Rap and Hip_hop is my favorite Muisc Type but some new stuff this and last year hasnt been great, the only good album ive heard for a while is Kanye West's College Dropout, but my fave rappers of all time are Busta Rhymes and Dr.Dre, to me most ppl only like rap and hip hop because *Its The Thing Of The Moment* example 50cent in da club, How many times was that played on radio ??, same with D12's My Band, to me, both of them were crap, yet it was constantly played !

yeah, a select few of the urban songs get seriously rinsed out on radio or nightclubs, i hated "My band" but it was on the radio constantly! also, kanye wests album is legendary with almost every song a classic, yet radio keep playing the same one track!

I think the idea is that radio stations will play the latest release from the album. Its all about exposure.

I'm totally into Rap at the moment, I was always more of a dance-head. But after listening to a lot of Eminem, Rap seems to be my number one form of music at the mo. As people have mentioned, Kanye West's album kicks arse, Jay-Z's Black Album is class and Outkast's latest album is just as good.

I hate is when people take the piss out of Rap saying "there just talking" and "theres no talent involved in Rapping", I beg to differ. The way verses are constructed and lines put together is very very clever. Rap music is lyrically deep. Rap music to me is black music only, I can't stand listening to Eminem now. He just seems cheesy to me now.

Exactly, also The Streets they are so called rappers but they just talk !, if they want true rap, then they should listen to Break Ya Neck by Busta Rhymes, that should prove all

The Streets are rap, Mike Skinner can't help the fact that he's softly spoken!

Hip-Hop eh...

A genre that has kind of almagamated with the American black-dominated Rap culture in recent times, and in my opinion for the worse. You'll notice the word culture in there, it's not so much the music I dislike, more the whole ethos of drugs, guns, pimpin, blingin etc. If you want some Hip Hop in a pure form without all the rap that has seeped into it recently, I urge anyone to check out DJ Shadow. This guy does some absolutely awesome stuff with decks and viynl, and the albums Entroducing... and The Private Press are two of the best from the bunch of 19 albums I just bought

That should be easily dealt with by pointing out that poetry is also "just talking". However, it doesn't seem to get you anywhere.

The odd thing is that the people say this tend to overlook the fact that the same faults are also present to a similar degree in the genres they do like. Pointing this out doesn't get you anywhere either.

Hip-Hop is almost unique among musical genres in being constantly challenged to defend itself against the charge of "not being music".The only other example I can think of is modern academic music. Anybody capable of seeing sense has already done so. Those who remain are simply not listening. Perhaps the proponents of Hip-Hop need to have the confidence to simply ignore the jibe of "Its not music. Its just talking."

See, thats where I differ. I like the drugs, guns, pimpin, blingin etc ethos of rap music. If you actually sat down and listen to the contact of the lyrics, its very very dark subject matter. Its real and its gritty.

I think DJs like Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow are incredible, how they do it is beyond me. I love his Jurassic 5 stuff.

I think hiphop is just like any other genre, there is good and bad, but I think the whole gangster rap thing has helped hip-hop gain a bad image and has helped lose its credibility as a good art form, in a similar way that drugs and cheesy trance gives dance a music a bad image. I think gangster rap sucks, egotistical utter crap, but there are so many good artists that you wont ever get to hear because kids are buying eminem.
