My Dad has been convinced that a TV in standby mode uses the same if not MORE power than when its on!!!

I find this hard to believe whether your TV has a CRT, LCD or plasma screen. His 'source' said he heard it on TV programme - so it must be true!

Anyone got any figures I could quote him?

Don't have any figures, but it's better to have it switched off anyway rather than on standby.

What's the point of standby mode anyway?

His source is about as reliable as "The Sun". Consumption of TVs varies depending on age and screen size but is typically somewhere between 80 and 200 Watts. Standby consumption also varies but is usually below 3 Watts. A quick look at the books for two of my sets shows 0.8 Watts (24" widescreen) and 1.1 Watts (32" Widescreen).

There is about to be an EU directive that all TVs should consume less than one watt on standby. they aren't quite there yet...

How could it consume more power???

It does depend on the TV. The chassis on a lot of the older ones were still live when left in standby, which indeed used almost as much as watching it.

But as said earlier, it's alot safer to leave it switched off.
