Hi,

I recently got a S G S phone about 4 days ago but I am already having some issues with it which may just be due to my complete lack of technological know-how so if anyone can help me i will be very greatful.

First problem is when i try to connect via usb to the keis thing my laptop doesn't recognise it and says something like mtp device failed to install. Ive tried to look online for an update but that doesn't seem to be the problem so i don't know what to do.

Secondly when i try to set up my uni exchange email both automatically and manually, it comes up with setup cannot finish, unable to connect to server.

So if anyone could help me resolve either issue i will be soooooo greatful. Bear in mind that you may have to explain things to me like i am a child or an alien who has never encountered technology as my knowledge of this sort of stuff is embarrassingly poor.

Thank youuuuuuuuuuuu

Connecting the Galaxy S is not as straightforward as it could be but I'll try to help as best as I can based on the experience I have with mine.

Firstly Kies is very flaky. You should connect to the Internet and manually upgrade Kies to it's latest version from the Samsung website as it seems to recognise phones easier than previous versions.

Better still avoid Kies and use USB connection to transfer files etc. When you plug the phone into USB you should get an option screen to choose between Kies and USB connection. (If you have installed Kies it will opt for that by default so solve that issue first!). The option process is slightly different depending on what version of Android is running on your Galaxy S.

If you are running 2.1 Eclair: After you choose USB connection on the phone screen you must go to the ststus screen (pull down the bar at the top of the screen to view) to activate and conform the USB connection. Once this has been done the PC should pick up the connection and offer a folder options window for both the phone memory and the external SD card.

If you have 2.2 Froyo the process is similar but you do not need to look for the confirmation screen as it will appear after you choose USB Connection. You do have to confirm by pressing a button displayed to complete the connection.

Hope the above helps. Once you have transferred your stuff always close the USB connection using the button on the phone screen before unplugging the lead and remember it can take the phone a few minutes to index files that have been transferred.

Another option if you have Wi-Fi at home is to use Kies Lite (available for Samsung Apps Store - icon on your handset). It allows control of the phone via WiFi.

Thank you so much for your reply. I have downloaded the new kies but havent tried it yet but in the meanwhile i was able to transfer my songs and files via the usb connection. I will play around with the new version of kies and if that doesnt work then i will have a go with the mini version.

I've still had no luck with my email but apparently this may be an android problem so i'll keep fishing around on google for a fix.

Anyway, thanks again
