But yet Apple's market share is around only 10%....make of that what you will.
Is easy for Apple to be the number one manufacturer of computers in the world when they have no other competition bring out computers running the Mac OS. They have an exclusive market audience that no one else is able to tap into. The other 90% of the market is full of hundreds of other manufacturers, so it's common sense really not one would be able to grab and hold onto at least a 10% share. Not because their products are rubbish, but because of there being so much healthy competition. |

Having 10% though does not prevent competition as Microsoft have lots of Mac users for it's Office products and since Intel installed the CPUs in Macs many are used as dual boot machines (Windows & MAC OS). |

People buy Macs, businesses buy OEM computers. Quote:

If the OEM products are so good why is the owner satisfaction so low and reviews so poor? |

Yep it's perhaps better to have 10% of a premium market than 50% of the mass market! I'm sure BMW has very similar stratagies. For lots of customers Apple is about style and snob appeal.

i agree. people buy an iphone just because it is an iphone and they want to be seen with an iphone. not because of what it can do. or cant; do
![]() on another note i wonder how long before tesco start selling mcbooks or offer genius bars in their stores... iPhones are amazing, perfect for people who aren't really technically minded as it's a great introduction to smart phones. I loved the one I had for a while but what I didn't like is the closed environment. I can do so much more with my Android and that is what I like about them, the freedom to do what I want which suits my needs. End of the day it's an individuals own preference of which phone is better for there own needs. Every phone offers something over the other, it's all down to what you want to do with it. I just wish certain fanboys, in particular a few on this forum, would realize that just because it has an Apple logo on the back doesn't mean it is automatically the best thing in the world and nothing will ever compare or beat it. |

Buying the best computer is a lot more than style and snob appeal. Don't insult people.
If you look at speed, processing power, easy storage, upgradability, software compatability (better software overall) and great OS (7) the the PC is the better computer; you can't really argue with those reasons. So, people buy Macs because they like them, like the look of them, and yes, enjoy the percieved snob value of owning and being a Apple fan; nothing wrong or insulting in that. We are all guilty of buying things because we simply want something rather than letting logic dictate what we need. Living more or less on my own now I don't need a four bedroomed detached house, place in Portugal or a new Land Rover Discovery but I got them ![]() Off to Portugal again on Saturday for a few days I suppose if a Mac fan I'd fly business class but these days I rely on Ryanair.

You can cock things up far more with Android too.
It's just one of the negative aspects of choice. |

Thanks for the clarification.
Apple, the number 1 manufacturer of computers in the world. with 94% owner satisfaction. The OEMs struggle to get 50%.Apple retakes World's Biggest Computer Maker Crown after 3 decades - with power of iPhone, iPad and Touch Still waiting for some real competition for the iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. It seems like the OEMs are "creatively challenged". |

I suppose it comes down to what one considers the criteria for 'best computer or mobile phone' but if the latest technical specifications or value for money are significant factors then Apple are simply not at the races. |

Just to add my tuppence worth,
I have owned an iPhone 3g and an iPhone 4 and found them both to be good phones but they seriously pale into insignificance when compared to my Nexus S. It also has its faults but just today I updated mine to the latest version of the OS Gingerbread 2.2.3 and I have to say its an amazing phone. I have long been an apple fanboy but even I have to admit that the time of the droid is finally upon us and at this moment in time I would not part with my nexus s for love nor money. Each to there own tbh and I am sure others will slate the Nexus S but until you actually own and use one then you will never know. I could never go back to iPhone now after using this. |

Hardy insulting as it's factual. Apple lag far behind others in terms of technical specifications on both PCs and Notebooks. No chance of playing a BluRay disk on an Apple product or a flash embedded video on an iPhone! The amount charged for upgrades is a joke and they make it deliberately difficult to make any amendment to the orginal specifications.
I suppose it comes down to what one considers the criteria for 'best computer or mobile phone' but if the latest technical specifications or value for money are significant factors then Apple are simply not at the races. Apple gives you:

A better screen and keyboard. (your main interaction with the computer)
Better build quality
Better Support and Service.
Better Battery Life
Better Wireless Performance
A better OS.
Better Software.
Better integration of Hardware, Software and OS.
And yes, better style and design.
These are all qualities that 'spec junkies' ignore, but they are the important ones. That is why Macs are objects of desire and the OEM products are not. ![]() As far as up to date technology I would say Thunderbolt is right up there while both Blu-Ray and Flash suck bigtime. Upgrading difficult? Will that CPU help you right a better novel? Can you get Scrivener 2 or Keynote for your PC? I can get lots of great software that you can only dream about. Well Windows 7 is very nice, but not as nice as OS X and as far as software goes you might note that most creative professionals use Macs. I suppose if you want to do some accounting or play games Windows will do though. And as I mentioned in my post above you ignore all the important things about computing while concentrating on hardware spec which really is only good for bragging about hardware spec. |

We learn from mistakes, or should, so perhaps more positive than negative?
It's much less easy to brick an iPhone. It just does what it does - in a smooth, dazzling way. That said, I would spend my own money on an Android phone, because I like its freedom and flexibility, I understand technical specs, I like internal upgradability and Apple insist on having a laugh with their pricing. The iPhone has not been knocked off its perch yet, but the Nexus S (for example) has closed the gap. In a year or so, Apple may have only their logo and marketing as the iPhone 6's main advantage over Android/Windows phones. I heartily agree that style and snob appeal are the major factors for many purchasers of Apple products, especially iPhones and MBs. Their choice. |

Not much positive about a bricked handset.

That must be why these Apple products always top the reviews. My MacBook is 10X the computer that my previous 4 Windows OEM laptops were. No wonder they sell so well. |

Hardly factual at all. Such comments are the type that "spec junkies" love. They ignore real world performance while concentrating on how big the HD is and how fast the CPU is. Ask yourself 'Will that make my computing more enjoyable'. Will it make my dissertation better? Will it make my presentation better?'.

Frank Lloyd Wright said 'If it doesn't look right and perform right, it has no place in my home.' I couldn't agree more. A Mac might be put together nicely but then so are other expensive makes, but the bits inside aren't any different on a Mac than a PC and btw Apple is an OEM as well for their computers as they're put together with 3rd party bits just like a Dell or Sony. As for better OS and better software, if thats the case why do so many Mac users still need Windows installed? Surely if the OS and software is that much better Windows isn't needed. Quote:
I doubt that very much. If people were so happy with the iphone, why would they jailbreak it? If people had to revert from a jailbroken iphone, to a stock iphone....that 94% owner satisfaction would fall quicker than jordans knickers.

You are sometimes correct in your statements, but it's hard to tell, as you would defend the Bite Logo under all circumstances, to your dying breath Quote:

We don't know which Windows machines these were. OS X has always been better than XP and Vista IMHO. As has been explained to you many times, Macs are the only machines that run OS X natively, and they sell well in particular market niches.

That's not to say that I am right and you are wrong, but I am not the one trying to say that my opinion is absolute fact. You seem to be. |

apple gives ya a £500 phone that is quite possibly the worst phone in terms of reception/call quality that i have experienced. even worse than a £100 nokia 6300i. i didn't realise quite how shoddy it was until i stopped using the bumper case. nice one next time mr apple i suggest you concentrate on getting the phone side right first. afterall you have named it an iphone. |

Oh look, as usual a thread about phones has degenerated into a "mines better than yours" argument. In fact, threads like these always remind me of this
Come on people, lets get back on topic please. So has the Iphone been knocked off its perch? Well was it even on a perch to begin with? Phones are different things to different people. The Iphone is a very easy phone to use, and has an amazing screen, and the best selection of apps. It is designed to appeal to the masses, and does this very well, in fact it could be called the Nokia 3210 of our age, such is its popularity. But, the world would be a very boring place if we all had Iphones, just as it would if we all drove BMW 3 series cars. This is why competition is good, especially when other manufacturers produce phones that can challenge the Iphone. Its all about choice for the user, as we all have different needs from our phones. I welcome the likes of Android doing well, as it will keep Apple on their toes, and they will in turn bring out better phones in the future, to stay competitive. Personally I like Iphones, but they are not for me as I like modding and customisation, so I have a HTC HD2 dual booting WinMo(yes I still like this defunct OS ) and Android 2.2. Also as a consumer I do not care who has sold the most, or made the most profit. The product meeting my needs is far more important to me, but far too many poster's seem to base their choices on the company's success and image, rather than if the product meets their needs. After all, does the fact that Lancia flopped and pulled out of the UK market make the Delta Integrale a bad car? |

Best Laptop 13" MBP 15" MBP 17" MBP Which? MacBook Best Buy MacBook Pro Best Buy Apple iPhone 4 Best SmartPhone 4G iPod Touch was the best MP3 player they ever tested. It's largely the same with all the reviews. My 2001 G4 Quicksilver is a better computer and longer lasting than its OEM contemporaries. Same is true of my 2007 MacBook. Mac are known for lasting a long time and being better value for money. Expandability? My Mac Pro is very good. Better Value? 94% of Mac buyers are happy with their computers. OEMs struggle to hit 50%. |

You're just being ridiculous. Nobody outside a Mac store believes this. There are big holes in your generalised Apple puffery, and that isn't the point of this thread, so I can't be bothered to go through them. The iPhone 4 is still a very good choice for users who want a slick, stylish, capable out-of-the-box solution. Users who want cutting-edge specs, expandable memory, flexible software, customisability and hackability, best value for money should probably look elsewhere. We will see what the next iPhones hold, but certainly their position is increasingly under threat. I foresee a low-cost iPhone Mini to hold back the tide, and later still some concessions and bundle deals from Apple to try to stay on top of the market. |
