Can I ask, and this is in no means might as an attack on your view point, what clever design features would you expect?

It's got a power button, volume button, large screen, camera, USB port and (if I recall correctly) an HDMI output. What more could they add feature wise to the physical design of it?

I do agree.

Previous generation iPhones looked horrible, most Android devices are unimaginitive and focus more on tech specs to help differentiate.

Although with what is primarily a screen and little else, its difficult for them to truly differentiate.

For me there are only two that stand out - the iPhone 4 (which has a beautifully elegant and clean design) and the Nokia N8 (the chrome accents around the side controls are quite beautifully designed, and the fact that they refused to compromise on camera quality).

LOL. That is some seriously ugly phone. Did they even bother employing a designer at all...

'Only' 350,000 apps? That seems like quite a few to me. and Apple are stricter than Android about duplicates!

“Also a lot of their customers are in a sense locked in to iOS due to the amount of money they have spent on apps. If they were to go and switch but be told in some mobile phone shop that they would lose all their paid for apps, they may think twice.”

Very good point, I'd forgotten about app investment. I wonder how much the average user has spent on apps for their phone (e.g. more than the average monthly bill?).

Nonsense. Apple very much care about market share, and at the moment they are not just at the niche end of the smartphone market, they have two of the most popular handset models.

Apple are greedy, but also very clever. I think they are busy plotting to see what they can do to make sure they hold on to their position.

3 stunned the industry, 3G changed it for ever, 3GS had no competitors. For now i4 has no close competitors, just feasible alternatives.

Apple can see where this is going, and they will try to head it off. The fate of Nokia makes it clear that it is not safe to rely on brand loyalty alone (although Apple inspires incredible brand loyalty).

Clonmult Ignoring its brick like appearance (some could argue its more minimalist elegance), what do you think of the technical side of the phone? Seems to be pretty good and I look forward to real reviews of it.

technically interesting, dual core processor and decent gpu, what is probably a distinctly average camera (phone is too slim to make it truly useful), and the battle for screen improvements is definitely helping everyone - all makes and buyers will benefit.

Lol @ the suggestion of minimalist elegance, wish they'd done something like that with the camera surround - even the now ancient SE W810i made a much better job of the cameras appearance.

Terrible battery life. And the GPU is wasted on an Android phone.

It's a pity they don't put more effort into their products.

Can I ask why you're stating this considering there have been no reviews of the phone yet to basis this on?

Because their phones already have terrible battery life, and a dual core processor is inevitably going to make it even worse.

If anything the evidence were seeing is that the dual core processors are actually more energy efficient going by the early reviews of the LG X2.

They = the sinister non-Apple enemy, presumably.

Here we go again...

What 'enemy' are you going on about?

They = Samsung, obviously.

It's not that reasonable to look over a handset like the Galaxy S2 and say that Samsung 'needed to put more effort into it'. The unbiassed reader would be a bit more convinced if you specified exactly what these shortcomings are, and what they should have done to remedy them.

Don't be an...

Oh, ok, no point.

What a daft thing to say without any basis at all.

What design features were you expecting?

It is a phone at the end of the day. I bet for the next couple of years most if not all phones will look very similar to this. There is only so much you can do with a phone. The current smartphones will be the base design for all new phones being released for the next couple of years.

I have no rose tinted spectacles for these either,

The iPhone has a nice screen and that's the all important bit.

such a shame that the most important part of this £500 'elegant smartphone', the phone capabilities themselves, rate as utter tosh. call quality + reception quality.= qc failure

I agree. That's gonna be the story, unless the iPhone 6 successfully launches with as thought-impulse controlled sunglasses with holographic lens display, and bone conductance mic and speaker.

I'd be surprised if Apple got away with making that mistake again.

So they only have a high end phone for what reason exactly? The only way to increase market share is to target different market segments with products for that audience - see HTC example (Wildfire, Desire, HD), Apple do not do this QED they dont care about market share.

Again these are not the most popular models

Apple care about market share, but it's the percentage of revenue rather than percentage of units. They may not sell the most phones, but they take more than 50% of the smartphone market revenue.

50% of mobile phone profit, I believe, not revenue.

But yes, so far they've just targeted the top end of the market, and it's worked out very nicely for them. I doubt they'll bother going into the lower down segments of the market unless they can maintain their high margins in doing so.

The sorts of margins Android handset makers are making probably isn't terribly appealing to them.

Thats not market share Thats profit per phone, which they can only do by keeping their phones niche
