I'm looking for a device to plug in to my existing setup to allow me to play media files straight to my TV.

The requirements I have are as follows,

Play as many formats as possible
Preferably connect via HMDI
CHEAP!
I would be looking to connect this device to my AV Receiver and play media files through my TV.

I have an XBox 360 and a PS3, both support media extender options and go some way to playing media files too. However they are both a pain in the backside to get working at times and can be quick picky about what file types they play.

If possible being networked would be nice to allow for simply FTP or similar style of uploading. However if this whacks the price up I'm happy to have a physical upload method required.

Any ideas?

(By cheap I mean under £100 and around £50 max if possible as my other half has got upset about my toys in the living room and wants me to cut down my spending)

Thanks

I bought an Asus O!Play HDP-R1

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-1080p-H...8661902&sr=8-1

three months ago and it does exactly what I hoped.

The Asus is generally regarded as having one of the widest file format compatibilities of any media streamer/player. It has HDMI output with lots of options upto 1080p. I use it mainly for HD Youtube clips I download and save to an external hard drive and for my own dvd's recorded on a Sony hdd/dvd recorder. I place the finalised dvd disc in a pc and copy the Video_TS folder to the hard drive, then rename it with the programme title(s). Through the Asus you can open the folder and click on the first VIDEO_TS.IFO file which brings up a normal DVD menu.

Surprisingly the picture looks better through the Asus than the same title played back on the Sony that recorded it (which also has HDMI output).

The other cheap option is a WDTV LIVE, similar to the Asus but has fewer file formats but has Youtube access. They both have their good and bad points, you'll just have to do your homework.

If the widest range of formats then a HTPC would have to be your choice. Plays EVERYTHING out there today and anything that will be developed in the future. Of course fully networked, full internet access plus hundreds of other functions.

You might be able to squeeze in under the £100 mark though around £120 would be more sensible.

That links to the USA website so it might only be released over there. Boxee is certainly for the American market.
