Veggies and fruit.

But if this is a diet question, be careful of honey and fruit - sugars!

And you need some fat, just choose the right ones and use sparingly. Avoid animal fat like cheese.

(Apologies if I've got hold of the wrong end of the stick )

That's not true. Avocado is loaded with fat, for example.

why the question ?

Plus there are many different types of fat and not all are bad for us, in fact some of them are essential.

And as somebody else mentioned if you are talking about dieting then you need watch a lot more items such as carbs and sugars.

Exactly. Sugar has no fat in it for instance.

Why is sugar bad for us I've always wondered. I get fat (heart attacks, blocked arteries yada, yada) but never understood why sugar was so bad?

Unused sugar gets converted and stored as fat.

yes, and carbs get converted to fat in your body more easily than fat does

it's one of the stupidest assertions of many, including the NHS

eat healthy by removing fat and eating 40percent carbs
why? your body doesn't need carbs (unless your an athlete etc), it does need fat, and it will convert fat into energy

thats why diets like atkins and south beach focus on reducing simple carbs.

I would saturated fats are the ones you need to be looking out. These are animal fats and the crap in processed food.

Anyone seen how many calories an Innocent Smoothie has in it? More than a can of coke.

Yes, but it's 2 to 3 of your five a day, so has a good nutritional value....unlike a can of coke, so not really a great comparison.

Oh yeah I realise that. I've known people drinking them when they want to lose weight though because they think they are low calorie.

Sorry but that's wrong, you do need carbs for energy, everyone does. I'm talking about the healthy carbs, not the stupid ones that have no nutritional benefit whatsoever, (e.g. basically any white carb.) But the good carbs are needed, they release energy over a longer period. Fats in avocados for example [the 'good' fats] won't make you fat, which is just common sense really.

It's a well known fact that anything you buy from a chemist's shop - chocolate, crisps etc - automatically loses all its harmful qualities.
