Yes, this is a time when there are so many problems in the world, economic, environmental and political and little hope of solving them, why shouldn't horror films reflect this sense of hopelessness?

In recent years the final girl end does appear to have been changing.

I'm thinking of 'Wolf Creek'.

...which is as good as an explanation as anything else really ...

Really though, it's just because most people want to see characters they can empathise with, to triumph against the odds ... 'cos that doesn't usually happen in real-life.

It does suck though, when they knacker the story (true or otherwise) to fit in with some dumb test-screen ratings.
(Like the Reef, as somebody pointed out earlier ...)
One of the reasons why I liked this film. Tries to turn it all on its head and make sense of it!
