My God! I was expecting to be given some information on a new band here, but it's hardly a revelation that you might like Split Enz if you like Crowded House - or am I just proving myself to be getting on a bit here?

I remember Split Enz when they used to appear in the most bizarre make up - and let's not forget brother Tim Finn too, who was the driving force of Split Enz more than Neil.

Others worth checking out: Tim Finn's solo work, Neil Finn's solo work, Finn, The Finn Brothers. I'm sure there's more! All pretty much along the same lines.

Blimey, bit touchy for someone who's presumably knocking 30 aren't we? I'm 43 by the way, and most people I know would know about Split Enz, but I guess we're not a bunch of little tackers like your lot.

well i cant think of that many people of your 'distinguished' age that would know split enz or name a song theyve done unless they lived in new zealand or maybe oz. lets take a poll.... ha

Ha! How about 'I got you'. That was a pretty big hit in about 1979. I bet they'd know that one, so nur!

(PS - found this: http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/split_enz/bio.jhtml while trying to find out what year it was a hit. Might be interesting.)

yeah they might recognise it if you played it them. not sure how many people could name it by just asking for a split enz tune....try taking a poll, hit the high streets and ask 10 40 somethings and see what the results are!! ok ive gone too far now
i bought the split enz dvd which has some good stuff on it but i dont rate the early stuff in the 70's, they started getting good in my opinion from the true colours album onwards. their best album is said to have been 'time and tide' tim and neil finn are touring england in october time this year, wouldnt mind seeing them, hopefully they will do some of the old classics

Like most people over 40, I was quite keen on Split Enz in the early 70s. I have the first two albums on vinyl, though I'm not keen on Mental Notes. Dizrhythmia is good though. Neil Finn joined for that one, which might have something to do with it. The only other Split Enz I have is a 'Best of' CD - apart from the 'I got you' sinlge, but then, everyone over 40's got that.

I remember they did a concert on Tv, which I tape recorded by sellotaping a microphone to the telly speaker. I wish I still had it though. It featured a fine spoon solo by Noel Crombie, plus a song called True Colours, which I really liked but can't remember any more. I don't think it's on the True Colours album. Do you know it?

I also remember Tim Finn saying: 'I'm Tim Finn. Full of Vim up to the brim'.

How did you get hold of the Split Enz DVD by the way, as it sounds pretty interesting? I've just done a search but could only find Australian or New Zealand sites selling it (which does kind of back up your argument, but I'll deliberately overlook that fact).

I noticed it has clips from BBC Sight & Sound In Concert, which must be the one I saw all those years ago.

Haha!! There you go. I knew it. Kind of backs up MY argument this time, so I shan't overlook it!! Hurrah for Mizzmozz! A poll of one person brought a 100% result in favour of... ME!!

The Oasis method of writing a Beatle song

Take the following chords.
C G7 Am Em (or E major) F and Dm7.
Mix randomly and there ya go

(for varity through in a few 6ths and major 7ths now and then).

I play in the posh tribute band - Cryded Hyse.

A Message To My Girl always used to play on the jukebox of the Summer Bay diner in Home & Away whenever there was a wedding or something. Great song that.

P.S. I remember ''I Got You'' very well. It must have been a pretty famous song at the time because I remember it from my time in junior/primary school.

err I was talking about Oasis. not crowded house or split enz!.

it was rather tongue in cheek , I do love Oasis songs, but I do recognise the very Beatlish chord sequences they use, eg 'dont look back in anger' has similarities to the open bars of 'let it be'.

Mind you , Ralph Mctells 'streets of london' also has the same chord sequence!
