New sound system needed for TV
FAYMONDO
26-02-2011
My trusty old Sanyo DVD/Audio player has packed up on my after 9 years. The set up has was just (excuse my ignorance) the red and white jacks from the TV going to red and white jacks into the back of the Sanyo and then using the aux feature. It gave a great sound (compared to just the now TV sound from my Samsung LCD) What is the best option for sound now from my TV ? I have 3 HDMI's on the go (Sky, gaming and Apple TV) Is it worth buying a mini hifi again (height an issue mst be mo more than 18cm) or jump in with a cinema system ? Thanks for any replies.

Pop down richer sounds and have a listen to the onkyo systems. By all accounts they are very good value.

If you're not looking for a full home cinema setup perhaps a soundbar might meet your needs?

I've just bought the Onkyo HTS 6305 and well pleased. Running Sky+ HD, Wii, Bluray and Apple tv - all sound great.

If you're on a budget you could even try some PC speakers. There's lots of active 2.1 systems available. You may need a phono adapter to the line-in depending on what inputs they take.

Got it down to these two

I am a bit worried by the Bose just working from the headphone jack. We like to play a lot of "Singstar" on the PS3 and have noticed on my in-laws Samsung there is a delay in the sound so would this happen using a headphone jack. Under my old set up the sound was OK running through my Sanyo.

Of the two I would recommend the Onkyo. It is a proper AV system in a compact format. The amp in the sub is much closer in concept to what you'd get in a full separates system. Plus it can be expanded to be a full 5.1 surround system.

The Bose system on the other hand is just a stereo system. It is not as flexible as the Onkyo. For one thing you can plug all your external kit into the Onkyo via HDMI something you can't do with the Bose.

My brother has the Onkyo and it's a huge step up in quality over the TV speakers. I'd get that if you don't want to get separates.

Onkyo arrived and all set up (very easy to do) I think I will expand to 5.1 later on. Still not convinced it is better than my old set up but miles better than the Samsung TV sound. I have the Sky HD box connected via HDMI. Is this the best way of connecting it for sound ? Also the Apple TV seems much louder than the TV. Are different sound levels to be expected ?

As you haven't expanded to 5.1 then it will do for now. Fore reasomns best known to Sky the HDMI connection only ever does stereo. If you want 5.1 surround at some point in the future you will have to use the optical digital output.

There isn't really any such thing as a standard for audio levels in domestic kit. So different bits of kit having different output levels is to be expected.
