First Windows Phone 7 update out today, but still no cut & paste

If you’ve been waiting patiently for your Windows Phone 7 device to get copy and paste support, bad news: you’re still going to be waiting after you install the update Microsoft is pushing today. The first Windows Phone 7 update brings changes which will pave the way for future updates — by improving the way the operating system handles updates.

F***ing Microsoft

The first "proper" update bringing copy/paste was announced at MWC to be coming in first half of March (most likely first full week of March i.e. week after next). This was the first time the update had ever been officially given a timeframe. This update is still on track.

The update that came out this week was an unannounced mini-update before the real ones start coming. The reason they've given is to improve the update mechanism software on the phones but the main reason is to test the global rollout process and uncover any issues before the real update hits.

You yourself even started a thread couple of weeks ago linking to an article saying the update would be on march 8th so what have you lost?

Have you gotten your Desire HD yet?

Ive noticed that they do these prepatory updates before major service packs for windows, The samsung i want will hopefully be realitively bug free by the time I get in in a few weeks.

On a side note, in app reviews in the marketplace I've seen more people with samsung omnia 7s complaining about apps not working properly. That could be samsungs generally always having crap firmware (my last phone was a samsung running symbian). Or it could be samsung omnias 7 being widespread due to being on three networks (to of them only having that one) so you're going to read more about them.

The samsung is a more stunning phone - S-amoled screen, NAND flash, great battery but an HTC might be a "safer" choice.

The first mini-update was actually pulled because too many samsung phones were being bricked by it. Maybe it's not just down to Microsoft, but to the manufacturer's as well to make sure things are bug free. I blame Samsung for this disaster.

And thats the reason I would never ever buy a Windows 7 phone. For some unlucky reason, the world has been stuck for the past 2 decades with bug riddled, crash prone Windows OS on our PC,s and Laptops and now to have it on our phones as well - no thank you!

It's completely different software to what you get on the PCs. The name is the only thing they have in common.

You didn't read my post. I said Samsung Phones. It's affected their Android phones as well.

It was the same with the iPhone in the early days. There were a few minor updates and bug fixes before a major update which added a load of extra features like cut/copy/paste etc.

It's still early days for WP7 and Apple had it far easier because they only needed to develop and test updates for their own hardware, which was basically just the iPhone and the iPod Touch at the time.

Except that's not true. In fact the early updates of the iPhone were the absolute polar opposite of what Microsoft has done. It has already been the subject of negative comment and a detailed comparison which shows just how slow Microsoft are being.

Cut/Copy/Paste didn't come to the iPhone until iOS 3.0 - it took a long time. http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/17/i...opy-and-paste/

My understanding is that it has been pulled for Samsung phones (but they want to re-release it asap once they've figured out what the issue is).

Other phones should be able to get the update as long as it's not blocked by their network. In the UK it seems all carriers except O2 (damn you O2) are allowing the update. You may need to force it via Zune software.

Interestingly, if I do an update check with my giffgaff sim in, it instantly says no update. If I do a check with an O2 sim in it, it seems to take a while longer before returning the same answer.

Has Android got cut and paste?
I've just never needed to try, although I do know it sadly has no expresso coffee maker button.

If you tap and hold a word in some text, don't you get a pop-up menu?

I finally got that mini-update this morning. It installed without any problems. It's not important, but I am impressed by the look of the update process in Zune software.

No-one forced you to use Windows. Linux has been around just as long, if you want a more stable alternative. But then you might still find bugs that aren't explained at all, so you might want to switch to OSX. Where you'll find more bugs. So I'd recommend sticking with Windows, at least there are over a billion people out there who might be able to help you solve a problem.

As for phones, I've never had a mobile in my life that hasn't randomly dropped signal, crashed out of an application, or rebooted itself, and I've had a lot of mobiles. I currently have a 3GS, which is supposed to be running the most advanced, stable OS around. So stop complaining, because it just makes you look like you don't know what you're talking about.

Yeah I got tweeted by O2 once they released the update. I hadn't had the notification so force-checked in zune software and got it. Overall a painless process and just took a few minutes. I've used about 6GB on my phone so far. Didn't feel like it was taking long backing up but that's because all the music etc taking up that space was already sync'd.

There might also be people out there using the phone without having been introduced to the zune software so encouraging its spread is only a good thing.

I just read on twitter that MS have delayed the cut n paste update yet again. It now won't be out until the end of the month at the earliest.
