The market comparison site, uswitch, has done a top ten listing based on live searches and sales of mobile phones. Their results are:

I wouldn't believe this BS with a ton of salt. This comes from a price comparison company that bases its findings on "searches" and sales, but they never explain where they get their sales figures from and it appears they don't have a good reputation.

I am sure that those looking for a cheap phone don't often do a search for an iPhone.

There have been hard figures of sales in the last few weeks and they indicate that both Apple and Blackberry are doing well.

It seems that Android still has a very long way to go.

Android is only in the lead as it's bundled in most phones as the software.

Which is just as well because smartphones need an operating system to function!

Android does well because it is based on proven technology that has been around a long time and it's free for phone makers to install.

Meanwhile the public seem to like it as many more folks appear to be buying handsets with Android installed.

It's being force fed to the market.

That doesn't mean Andorid is the better platform. Personally I prefer Samsung's Bada OS.

I'm very surprised that there are no LGs in the top 10.

I've seen so many people with LG mobile phones.

I find this information entirely believable. This is info coming from USwitch based on their users. U Switch is a company for people looking for the cheapest deals - the kind of people who go into Carphone Warehouse every time their contract is up and ask "what's the best phone I can get for a free upgrade or for the least money". It's people shopping for the most minutes, the most texts, the most internet, and the cheapest phone deals. Those deals are being offered across a range of service providers and across a range of phones, but the iPhone isn't generally being discounted by very much. The prices are premium and that's the way Apple wants it. They're competing in the premium space based on a high quality phone with a great feature set, exactly the same as they do with their computers - they don't try to compete on price.

It stands to reason that if someone who doesn't really know much about phones has seen the iPhone and HTC and the Galaxy S and Defy being TV advertised, that when they get into CW or check on U Switch for the cheapest, then iPhone isn't going to be top of the results.

The problem here is that people (including the OP) are interpreting the data to mean that the HTC Desire is outselling the iPhone. I don't believe that at all. All of theHTC phones combined are not outselling the iPhone. If you want to claim that the Desire tops U switch searches - that is fine although it proves the square root of diddly squat.

Its in fact been shown on many other sites as well that HTC and Android are the more popular platform and phone but for some reason apple users cannot bear the insult that their favourite phone and OS is getting humped.

Shame really as it then now forces apple to do something better and vice versa. Dunno why people on here think apple are unbeatable at anything they do. Defies logic.

Maybe, but i see it as showing the Desire HD is more in demand now than the iphone 4 is. The chances of it outselling the iphone 4 in the same time as the iphone 4 has been out is extremely likely the way its going and there is a reason why its happening.

lndeed, grumpyoldbat. l don't for one moment think that uswitch are being anti-Apple - they are merely reflecting the feedback and purchasing patterns of their customers. For example, if you look for what's on offer on a monthly contract for £20 here http://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/contract-phones/, then that brings up predominantly Android mobiles and then the customers make their purchasing decisions accordingly.

It's not about bias but about pricing and consumers making their choices based upon those prices. If the iPhone 4 had a lower price then it would almost certainly sell better - simples.

The anti apple stance is only ever taken by apple fans who cant stand to see apple lose at something.

Most people will see it as a good thing and great for competition.

But this isn't about UK sales at all. It's about searches for cheap mobile phones and I think we can agree that the iPhone doesn't live in the budget end of the market. There is no proof at all that the HTC Desire is selling better in the UK than the iPhone.

HTCs combined worldwide sales of all their phones are far less than the sales of the iPhone and Android traffic in Europe lags way behind iOS traffic. Way, way, behind.

Yes, but as I point out, Apple aren't going to lower their prices. They've never done it with their computers and they're highly unlikely to do it with their phones. They're a premium brand. They may not sell the most number of units, but they are absolutely generating the most profit from those phone sales. Of 8 vendors analysed (HTC, Apple, Motorola, RIM, Nokia, LG, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung) HTC had the top selling number of units, but a massive 51% of the profit from the market went to Apple.

I think they're probably perfectly happy not selling the most, but making the most money.

This appears to be a severe case of De Nile http://www.google.co.uk/images?hl=en...w=1024&bih=545. Under the current economic circumstances, fewer people can afford £55 a month contracts or afford to buy £500 mobiles hence the report from uswitch.

The iPhone 4 is a very well designed product with a high degree of functionality but it's also highly expensive at the current time hence the fall in popularity. It's not bias on the part of uswitch but market reality.

Just noticed this and 2 things wrong with those sites.

The first link, the expert is the head of statistics at the british bankers association who are moaning about the results of overprices bank fees. Funny they moan about potentially losing something that generates them billions every year isn't it lol

Second link, the results ended at the beginning of last month. Nearly a full 2 months to let android pass.

So your links really mean nothing.

It's not really very clear what this 'best mobile phone chart' is based on. Looking at this week's data, the Nokia 1800 is number 3!

It doesn't say, though, how it reaches conclusions. How much weight does it give to sales, for example, and how much to searches on uSwitch and other comparison sites?

Finally, the term 'best' is annoyingly misused too. It implies a value judgement but they don't actually mean that at all.

I could see how you would think phone traffic meant nothing.

Whereas you base your views on "internet searches" translating that to sales = 'Fuzzy Logic'.

It all sounds like it was dreamed up on the back of a fag packet.
