Everytime my phone shows "international" as the caller I ignore it as it is usually a foreign call centre trying to sell me something I do not want!

Unfortunately I do have some friends in Europe who occasionally phone and as a result they get ignored too.

Is there any way to get CLI to show a foreign number that is not withheld in the first place? If mobiles can do it why not land lines?

I use BT's Call Divert calling feature to divert my (BT) landline's incoming calls to my mobile - and see the CLI of all international calls (proving that the CLI is present).

However, BT's response when I complained that they do not present the CLI of incoming international calls to my landline is that they withhold the CLI of international calls because they do not know whether the (international) caller wanted to withhold their number or not!

They allow through calls from international call centres with bogus CLIs like 00000000 and 11111111, but won't let me see real international CLIs. You couldn't make it up.

In your position, leaving your phone on permanent divert to your mobile would overcome the problem. Expensively.

Thank you for that clarification!!

BT could take view that international callers could withhold their number themselves if they do not want it to be displayed! Or maybe not......

The point is the international CLI is passed (so that BT knows who to charge for terminating the call) and the 'withhold my number' prefix equivalent to our 141 (if they had used it) has already been stripped out.

It's a nonsense argument anyway because, as you say, UK mobile operators pass the CLI to their customers (in the case of my diverted calls, having received the CLI, which I am prohibited from seeing, from BT).

depends where in europe your friends are. Some countries will display numbers if they put a code in front of your number. I can confirm that southern Ireland numbers definitely show up.

Perhaps.

However, when my sister-in-law in Spain calls, my home phone's CLI shows 'International' but, if I have calls on divert to my mobile, I see her full number.

I use Talktalk as my phone/ISP and have found that on most occasions calls from Australia and New Zealand will show CLI.I even had a ringback from OneForAll,which indicated that their call centre was in the Phillipines!! As an after thought,my exchange is LLU'd,maybe that has a bearing on the matter.
