I have only just noticed this on my 3GS! When I swipe left from the iPod controls, I get a volume control screen. Metallic looking, different from the look of the volume control when you're in the iPod.
Not sure what the point of it is, when you can use the side buttons, but still ... I thought I knew my way around my iPhone completely!
