Hi, i used to have a dvd recorder, buts its given up the ghost, i didn't use it enough to spent £100+ on a new one, but then i found a few home video tapes that went missing, so i was thinking what is the best and most cost effective way to convert them? would i be better off getting a capture card for the pc? and if yes what one would you recommend? or is there a dvd recorder i can get for less then £50? even if its second hand.

Thanks!

You can get them on eBay for this price or lower.

Ebay or somewhere like Cash Converters usually have DVD recorders well within your price range. I saw a Pioneer DVR-3100 in Cash Converters a few weeks ago for £40. Excellent recorder (I have one myself) but, being an older machine, it only works with DVD-R/RW discs that are 2 or 4 speed. It doesn't always accept newer 8 or 16 speed discs as there hasn't been a firmware update for this machine since about 2006. Mine works fine with Verbatim discs, so I tend to use those.

I have also seen an Acoustic Solutions recorder in Cash Generators for £15 a couple of weeks ago.

Of course you can always buy a USB capture device for a PC, which can be bought for £10-£15. This has advantages in that if you have decent editing software you can alter colours, contrast, brightness, sharpness etc. before committing to disc.

1. Buy an easy cap USB device, £10 upwards. Try to get the one with correct drivers for your Windows version, though, all the different drivers are online ........

2. download dvd flick freeware to make a playable dvd image.

3 Create a dvd with your usual burning software.
